p.1 #1 · traveling to london :)

So this summer I'm going to be going to london for a week with my family. My question to all of you is what do you think is appropriate to bring, as I may or may not mind lugging around my gear but more on the lines of whether or not I should.

I have a D1h, D50, 12-24, 50 1.8, 80-200 2.8 af-s, 18-55, 28-200 3.5-5.6
So I feel I have 2 options really which is to bring the heavy stuff with the

D1h
12-24
50 1.8
80-200

or D50
18-55
50
28-200

Also before the trip I may or may not pick up a midrange 2.8 either a 17-55 range or 28-70 (tamron, tokina, sigma) anyone recommend one?
not just for this trip but overall for general use. I think I might be leaning more towards the 28-70 range since I already have wide angle covered.. though 17-55 might be nice as a walk around lens if I only want to carry one lens on me. Though this almost never happens. I normally will carry most of my gear.

Thanks in advance for any help.

London needs mainly wide angles and fast glass.. I'd bring the 12-24 and the 50 and whatever body you like.

There is always a lot of walking involved in London even to visit just one or two things, so think about how much stuff you want to carry. Carrying a backpack of gear in the tube at 30C is not nice.

^^ What panos said ^^. I'd add the lighter telephoto too for the occasional long shot.

I really doubt anyone from the US would come to the UK to pay for camera gear...

London is a city best explored on foot. Get yourself a nice compact camera bag (if you don't have one already), a week pass for the underground and explore the city to your heart's content.
In terms of lenses, that was the question after all, then the first of your options looks top. The 17-55 would also be well suited to keeping the packing simple though it is heavy of course.
You might also want to think about remaining a little inconspicuous. London is a city well used to tourism but people won't take kindly to long lenses being shoved in their face or pointed in their direction so try to keep your lens choice sensitive to this.
One final point is that of insurance. Theft is always a possibility, especially if you explore down the less major streets for the more original photo's and so just be aware of the risks and take precautions.
I'm sure half of what I said was unrequired and already known but I decided I may as well try to be as helpful as possible.

i'll go for the D50 with a 18-55 or 28-200.
depending on what areas i'll be shooting, wide landscapes or for telephotos,
but the 18-55 would be sufficient and light weight.

In London last summer with:
D2X
28-70/2.8 - used lot
35/2 for museums
85/1.4 - used a lot
70-200/2.8 - used occasionally

I use telephotos a lot in cities.

I'm thinking I might want to take my D1h and 12-24, 50 and the 28-200. If I do get a midrange zoom maybe I'll substitute that for the 28-200 or take both.
I dont think I want to take the 80-200. Its a bit bulky.
Thanks for the help.
