p.1 #1 · Sigma 24 EX DG, 3rd's A Charm!

Well, the first one arrived in what appeared to be in open box shape, It seemed very sharp, but obviously used! I was very disappointed. I had already waited almost three weeks to get the lens, due to one or another of a series of extended holidays observed by the seller. So, back went the Sigma 24mm f1.8 EX DG Aspherical Macro.

Try number two: It arrived less than two weeks after the return of copy one (no holidays, whew), but it was so soft that it was unuasable. It should never have left the factory in this condition. It should be noted, however, that neither of these first two lenses exhibited any front focusing issues whatsoever (as many Sigma lenses are reported to do). So, back to the seller copy two went for one least try - so far with Sigma I have always stopped with three attempts.

Copy number three arrived today, in a crisp box that crackled when I opened it. Was this going to be some kind of indicator? Took it out, and all mechanical functions worked properly. A few puffs, and onto the camera.

My, my, my - third time can really be a charm! I have owned the 24L, and sold it after only a few indoor trial uses. It was just too soft in the corners for me for the amount it cost. Granted it was very sharp in the middle, with everything else an L should be, but that just wasn't enough. So, this time I laid out 325 bucks, and got everything I have been looking for in a 24mm prime lens all along. This copy is very sharp in the middle, with correspondingly sharp edges, and color and contrast to compare to the shots I looked at tonight that I I took with the 24L. I am pretty certain that nothing in the Canon lineup compares to this lens if you get a good one - notwithstanding a great copy of the 24L (for four times the price).

Kudos to Pixel Perfect, as this was a tip that I originally got from him, and it was a good one! I heartily recommend anyone that can handle returning a copy or two to try this gem out - for double the money it would still be an amazing value!!! My copy is a gem and is an absolute keeper in my bag for good !!! It would take something much much better to replace this kind of quality and value, and I don't see that happening in the foreseeable future.

P.S. Be careful of which Sigma 24mm f1.8 lenses you order if you choose to do so, as there are several versions of this lens, some of which I understand do not work on a digital body. This lens is the new macro version, with a nine blade diaphram, and 77mm filter size.

It took three tries and you are bragging?

Knowing what piles of shit the new Toyota Camrys are (yes, I'm an engineer from Detroit with previous ties to Toyota), good luck with the off-brand...

So three Camrys would be OK if the third worked, but one Fusion would piss you off?

I'm not an auto gearhead, and in re-reading your post I do not get your point at all (not sure it makes sense). And you obviously haven't been around much, and don't know the Sigma rule: "If at first you don't succeed, you best be prepared to try again."

I could care less about their abysmal QC, its the end product I care about. And that, dear friend, is sitting squarely in my bag as I type this. And yes, it is very very good indeed! This lens makes three Sigmas (24, 35, 24-70), and they all work just fine - some for several years now. Are you in the practice of drop kicking your equipment

Hey good to see you finally got a keeper tinke.

I'm going to test my copy against my 17-40 and 24-105 just to see how they compare. My impression was that the Sigma was decent wide open, but really got into it's stride from f/2.2 at least on a 1D II. Haven't used it on my 5D yet to see if that holds up.

p.1 #5 · Sigma 24 EX DG, 3rd's A Charm!

Like many people here I have gone through the gambit of small fast Canon primes in this range. I still have a nice 35/2 to show for it, but the rest I tried did not pass muster. These included the 24/2.8, which was quite nice, but just too slow. I have zooms that can cover f2.8. Likewise the 28/2.8, not as sharp as the 24/2.8, and just as slow. I tried three Canon 28/1.8's searching for the fix; they all had issues, and none were particularly sharp. So I was very frustrated (like many here - I know for a fact). This lens is a Blessing - sharp, fast glass. And all the test shots I took today were wide open. Maybe not as fast as the 24L, but I have other L light hoovers that will do the trick just fine in that same league. Sometimes you need a low light 24 wide, and I never found an acceptable and sharp lens before this that was worth what I was willing to spend for the quality. I thought 28mm was as wide as I would find in fast glass, but this one really does the trick at 24mm . This lens delivers in spades.

I strongly suspect as more people hear about this lens that there will be much more talk and posting about it. No reason at all now to stoop to the inferior general IQ of the 28/1.8 (not to mention pricey) to get reasonably priced and compact fast glass for Canon EOS.

P.S. Actually my third Sigma is the 30/1.4 (not a 35mm as I stated), which currently lives in its box since getting the 35L. It is a worthy travel lens though, a good copy to boot, and I would not hesitate to use it on any occasion. And yep, I think it took me three tries for that lens too!

Why did you return the lens to the seller? Personally I would have sent it to Sigma for calibration to be certain it was going to come back perfect rather than gambling on another one on the shelf. It probably would taken the same amount of time with shipping and reshipping.

My first Sigma 20mm. f1.8 is great - never did get a good copy of the Sigma 24-70 (after 3 tries).

Well, first things first, I got what by all appearances was a "not new" lens the first time. Secondly, I knew these lenses to be sharp, and wanted one sharp out of the box even if I was going to send it in for some sort of calibration anyway. Sigma lenses can be tricky, and there is no point in sending in one that is never going to calibrate properly. Fortunately, I have ordered enough stuff from this seller that they provided free shipping both ways for both replacement lenses. Fortunately, it does not look like this one is going to need to go in to Sigma at all - yeah!

How would you compare the Sigma 24 to the 30 1.4 you own. I have often wanted to pick up either (or both) of these lenses, but I worry that even if I get what appears to be a great copy on my current 40D when I upgrade my camera body the lens may not perform as well.

Well my 24/1.8 was 1st time lucky as was my 15-30 , 24-70 , 100-300 all produce equal or better quality than my maybe my bad 1st time purchased 17-40 L , 28-70 L , 70-200 f/2.8 & 4 L, 100-400 L lenses. How unlucky was I ?

As was this fella with his 35/1.4 L https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/654381

I regularly use an EF300 f/2.8 with a Kenko Pro 300 2 x teleconverter, a fellow photographer ( Canon purist) tells me that the image recorded is not a Canon one? ROFL I split my sides.... ''No!'' I said... ‘’the image recorded is an ADOBE photoshop one numb nuts....’’

The only Sigma that I've pondered over quality was the 120-400 OS EX . I posted some comparisons on here vS Sigma 100-300 .
However it was £450 free shipping from the other side of the World how could I expect stellar quality.

I'm a compulsive seller / buyer of gear but still own my Sigma stuff (above). Fantastic value for money.

The debate over Sigma/Tamron will never go away ...pure lens snobbery

.

Are the images above the 24 1.8? After reading some of the comments in the FM reviews section on the 24 1.8 (overall rating 7.1), I can't help wonder what is going on with this lens.

There are several versions of this lens. One, that I know was released a couple years ago does not work on a digital at all I don't believe, only film, as there is no chip for it. I believe another model will work on digital, but only on the older camera models (pre 10D). I will try and do some research and find out exactly what is what - when I do I will post it to this link. Since Fred seems recently to promote B&H, I will list the link for the new Sigma 24mm f1.8 model for newer Canon cameras here:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/217772-USA/Sigma_432101_W_A_24mm_f_1_8_EX.html

This lens works on a 10D, 20D, 30D, 5D and all the 1D's - it is not an APS-C lens (as the Sigma 30/1.4 is). IMHO this lens is superior to all its predecessors by a wide margin (I tried the earlier film model).

I had never even thought of this lens until reading this post, and now I'm about to hit the buy button at Amazon. I love the idea of a fast wide prime. I figure I can just return it if I hate it

Thanks! I'll be sure to post some shots when I get mine (overnight at amazon prime is nice)

You might want to post the Amazon link here.

The older model has the word "ASPHERICAL" written directly under where it says 24mm on the lens, and on the new one is says "MACRO" there. That is one way that I know of to differentiate the older model from the new one. Both lenses have the word Aspherical written on the lens, but the placement is different. I believe that the model that says Aspherical under where it says 24mm on the lens is the old model for film with no chip available (you simply get an Error 99 message). Check the "enlarge" link on the B&H site and you will see what I am talking about - I will post that link below. Good luck!

The other thing about the 24 f/1.8 DG is it's a macro designated lens and has a very close focus distance of only 7" and does 1:2.7 = 0.37x. Great for flower closeups. The 17-40L by comparison focuses down to 11" and does 0.25x @ 40mm

Well, in answer to your question I like both lenses a lot. As of right now I would say I like the color rendition and clarity of the 24/1.8 wide open over the 30/1.4 wide open. It has a very neutral tone to it. Though my 30/1.4 will work in places the 24mm won't go, it has a slightly yellow tint to it - though nothing that could not be addressed in PP. You need to remember that if you upgrade to a 1D or 5D body, that the 30/1.4 APS-C lens won't work.
