It is a unusual crop for such a picture. I think it would work if he was looking at the camera but with this crop and looking down it does not work for me.
As well I think it would be better to crop in closer and remove the top of his head and more of the side.
Lastly you don't quite have the middle of his face - you are off a bit.
The background could be a bit more plain to improve.
The rule of thumbs are:
1) ocus on the eyes - which you have done
2) keep the background from distracting - which is okay but could be better here
3) eyes 1/3 down from top on portrait
Good subject, good focus on eyes, good exposure. Keep on trying.
