p.1 #1 · First critique thread here: children at the park

Hi, I believe this is my first post where I will be posting any of my photography. To be honest you all are a bit intimidating to a new photographer such as myself. I do however wish to get better and what way is more effective than being critiqued by great photographers?

I decided it was too nice a day to waste studying for organic chemistry so I went to the park with my camera. I have shied a bit away from taking candid pictures of strangers but the children playing were just too great of subjects to pass up. I was a bit nervous at first but, me being younger, I didn't get too many looks.

Anyways, here are a few of my favorites.

All pictures taken with a Canon 350D and a 55-250mm IS. ISO was 400 because I had been chasing a squirrel around and needed a high shutter speed.

1.
179mm ISO 400 1/1000sec f/5.6

2.
250mm ISO 400 1/2000sec f/5.6

3.
250mm ISO 400 1/1000sec f/5.6

4. - should I clone out the trash cans?
163mm ISO 400 1/1000sec f/5.6

5.
250mm ISO 400 1/1600sec f/5.6

Thanks in advance

Well I'm no "long time" photographer but I do have a good knowledge so I'll give it a shot...

1. I like the expression on the boy's face and the play equipment, but I don't care for the people in the background except Mom. The guy has his butt above the kids head and it doesn't look good, the guy in the background kinda looks a little gay the way he is standing which isn't good for a picture like this.

2. I like the angle, path, and colors, but I'm not sure what he is looking at. I would have liked to see more of the face.

3. Good, but the leg and hair are cropped off which isn't good, also there is a white object at the bottom that shouldn't be there. You could have used a slower shutter speed and "dragged the shutter" to get more of a motion blur effect which would have been nice.

4. Cool action shot, I would leave the trash cans but clone out the red bag on top of them.

5. I love it!

Thank you Whizkid. Lately I've been focusing on framing the subject(and thankfully I think I am getting better). I'll have to start looking more into the shot as a whole now that I seem to have it down a bit.

No other takers though?

1st would be better with cropping to just above right background lady head. Cropping down takes away the notice from the people. I am not sure the eyes work in this picture because he is looking back at someone not in the picture. If it is so obvious get the mom too.

2 he is a bit small in the picture - I would frame or crop in closer.

3 needs cropping off of bottom to get rid of grey. Generally it is not advised to crop through joints. The white balance seems a little yellow.

4 would be better if he was not looking at you but good leaving room in front of him. I would crop off the top and clone or crop the right red and grass. Good work capturing though.

Last would be much better if much tighter. The grass and water don't add much for me.
