p.1 #1 · Any chance we'll ever see a 500 or 600 f/5.6?
Will Canon ever create a less expensive 500 or 600 with a max aperture of f/5.6? Canon makes the 400 f/5.6, which I own and enjoy very much, but I would still like something a little longer without paying the extra $4,000+ for the 500 f/4. I think there should be a market for a lens like this in the $3,000 range. Let me know if I'm being unrealistic here.

I think they should but maybe they think they would loose sales of the big guns as it would only be 1 stop difference. If they wanted to go to 500 with a consumer L then they may decide to give us an update of the 100-400 by pushing to 500 in the same vein as the Bigma and tamron 200-500.

I would love to see a 500mm f/5.6 but I doubt this will ever happen. If you are shopping for a 500mm around $3000 have a look at the "old" 500mm f/4.5L. Fantastic lens

I'd love to see either but Canon will never listen. Alternatively I would love a 100-500 f/4-5.6L IS with a mfd of 2.2m (like the Sigma 150-500) for close-up work. This would be a magic travel setup paired with a 40D say.

Yet if they were able to create a 500 f/5.6 (IS or non), for lets say 2-3K, they should be able to sell 2(+) for every 500 f/4's therefore increasing profits. Yes the 500 f/4 sales may suffer, but OTOH there are a lot more people willing to drop 2-3K rather than 6K.

Oh I think they would sell a shed load to the amature/semi pro sports and wildlife photogs, Maybe they could squeeze a bit more light thru the 500/4 (it went from 4.5 to 4 last time) to give a bigger reason to go for the more expensive option. A 500 5.6 would be a great partner to the 300 4 .
