when you directly convert CRW to jpeg what is the amount of compression?
as opposed to the amount done in camera if you shoot just Jpegs?
still debating this RAW thing sorry if question is lame..
I am using an 30D.
The amount of compression should be adjustable in the RAW converter.
I'm not sure the level of compression done directly in camera but could be assessed by looking at the file size. Amount of in-camera compression is also controllable in most cameras (small, med, large etc)

This part does not sound quite right to me - though you may be able to argue that resizing an image could be considered compression (in a way), I think the more standard meaning of the word would map to the "quality" adjustments - ala course, fine, superfine, etc...
The other parts of your post seem sensible enough.
Resizing and compression are two different things. And yes the camera has different compression settings and size settings. Check your manual. It will explain it better than I could. Small, Med, and large are your image sizes and fine and normal are the compression settings for each size.
As for raw vs jpg debate, you can find arguments on every forum about that topic. I will just say that I finally read enough to convince me to go to raw simply because I had so much more pixel information there to work with IF I wanted to. The adjustability in white balance and exposure alone are worth it to me. And if you are happy with the way your images look then just do a straight conversion with no adjustments. No muss, no fuss.
