Let's put this in perspective. The 200-400 weighs less than a gallon of water. I am 56 years old and I'm not very physically fit but when the day comes that I can't carry a 7 pound lens in a back pack (and yes, I have back problems including degenerative disk disease and arthritis), that's the day I need to retire to the rocking chair. Pare down your nonessential gear and take only the things you need. As a nature photographer the main thing I need is quality glass.
:o) guy leave your pda, symban phone, gps, p&s, leatherman, behind and take the good glass. if you can afford it and can use it your not going to regret it, you haven't in the past have you?

Seriously though, Guy what are thinking after all our banter?
I think I will go for the 200-400VR...(95% chance), I am doing weight calculations to optimize my backpack and I am still hesitating to take it with me during my next travel (Quebec, Canada). Reasons are safety and weight... we'll see. On the other hand, having a 200-400VR at home and traveling with a 80-400 might be a bit stupid as well...
Like said, you can get a crop body to get more focal length. I'm in the same boat as you, however I need 2.8 and I need zoom, so I don't really have a choice, gotta be Sigma 120-300 2.8. I hope to pick one up next month.
Several good points in here. I would also recommend investing some money in a good backpack. In my backpacking/camping days, I was AMAZED at how important the fit and style of backpack was when regarding weight. I weighed 150lbs and was amazed that when I got a good backpack, I was carrying 75-100lbs on my back (for 25+ miles in a weekend).
PS - I have and use my CCW permit, even when shooting photography. Weight and concealment is most important, so I carry a Kel-Tec PF-9 100% of the time. If I wanted something accurate, I would carry one of my target/range guns (I shoot IDPA).
