How would you use a polarizing filter for the sigma 12-24? The specs say it needs a Rear (gelatin filter insert type), I phoned adorama and they said sigma doesnt make a filter for this yet, I am reluctant to buy this lens if I cant use a filter in it.. Anyone have any solutions?

It is worth noting that polarizing filters become less effective the wider your field-of-view becomes. That said, using a front-mounted polarizing filter on the sigma is possible.

Check page 3 of this thread for a discussion on this topic - to summarize, you need a 77mm filter, and vignetting occurs from 12-14mm when used on an APS (DX) sensor DSLR...but it is possible. If you shoot Nikon and you must have a polarizer at 12mm, then the Nikkor 12-24mm may be a better choice for you.

Hi Secretarian, thanks for the information.. Do you know anything about the rear gelatin mount filters? are they even worth trying? As for the 77mm filter, how would those hoya super thin ones designed for wide angles perform?

Low profile would allow a sligh improvement in terms of the focal length where vignetting occurs. As for the gelatin filter, the main problem I have with it is that you have to remove the lens to insert it, and I hate to remove the lens because of the dust issue...in fact that's the main reason I have two camera bodies, it reduces the number of times I have to change lenses. Anyhow I don't like using filters, but if I have to use a polarizer, I use it on my 17-40mm.

Great, so aside from the dust issue a rear gelatin filter would function best with polarization and have minimal vignetting? correct?

btw are any of your 12-24mm sigma shots on the forums here taken with a 77mm polarizer?

thanks for your help..

No such thing as a gelatin polarizer. If you must use a polarizer, a front-mounted filter is your only choice. I never use any filters in my shots.
