its called HDR. if you google it there should be many 'how-to' instructions. Essentially you take the same image at different exposure settings and compile the pics in photoshop or another program.
Hi thanks for the nice replies! 5 exposures at 2 stop intervals changing shutter speed leaving the aperture constant. Combined the raw files in a really easy to use program called Photomatix http://www.hdrsoft.com . I was trying to make the photo look over the top but you can get a much more realistic look by the adjustments in photomatix. Then some minor adjustment in photoshop --saturation and contrast.

Yeah i've got the demo of photomatix - I really like it.
This freaking rocks. Really. I'm going to try and learn that some day soon. Can you get much of the same effect with just one exposure ? Can you do this with jpeg images or do they have to be raw ?
