Thanks for the great comment - I think I'm blushing a bit
Yes, all these were shot using the Nikon 300 f/2.8vr - some I used an ND filter(s) to slow the shutter speed for wheelblur and still keep the lens fairly wide open for that excellent dof. Since I picked up the 300 last summer I have had a real hard time NOT using it - even when it becomes difficult to carry around with outher gear (and I carry way too much gear)! At the criterium race I decided to leave the 300 in the car and just shoot with the 70-200.......after the first race I decided I would rather carry the extra weight and went back to the car for the 300.
In a perfect world, Nikon would release a 100-300 f/2.8 so I could sell the 300 for a 400 f/2.8....but then my wife might seriously dissown me.
This weekend I am shooting a large downtown criterium in Wilmington DE and just picked up a ND filter for my 17-55 lens. This way I can keep a slow shutter speed for panning and open up the lens a bit to use less power on my flashes (I loved strobing cycling) as well as shorten the flashes recycle time - we'll see how this goes.

Michael,
your pictures are excellent. They are the reason I am trying to learn to shoot cycling! After my first attempt, and looking at yours, I have MANY years ahead of me just to get close! just great photos, your photos in this series have a quality about them (i think its the lighting) that just pops, but keeps it very warm at the same time. I can't explain really what I am feeling when I look at them, but i want to recreate it!
