+1 (The finish is good overall, but the CF door...)

OK - opening myself up to some flames here but - using film terminology - colors from the 40d seem 'satiny' to me compared to my 10d, which seems to produce 'glossier' colors. To me my 40d's colors compare to those of the 1dM2, which is to say more realistic than those produced by my trusty, beloved old 10d. I've played around with the settings on my 40d, but can't produce the same color, eh, feel, as those from the 10d.
Anyone care to join me out here on the ledge?
I don't know about that. I think I prefer my 10D files. I definitely liked my 10D images over the 30D. The 40D images appear to be better than the 30D in some subtle ways I can't put my finger on (even using the same Picture Style, i.e. Faithful).
If I had to pick two (related) things to improve in the 40D, they would be low-light AF closer to a 1-Series (I shoot a lot of youth sports), and being able to AF at f/8. Yeah, a better LCD would be spiffy, but I don't feel it would give me a meaningful benefit the way better AF would.
The things I like the most are:
6.5 fps
High ISO Noise Reduction
Live View (if I ever get the camera attached to my telescope)

I'll take some of that ledge. I prefer the 10d jpgs the best out of all the prosumers. I've come close with the parameters, though. I have one for the 10d and another for 5d.

Overall I think it is a very fine camera, and I love it.
This has me curious. Why on earth would you want to opt for 12 bit instead of 14? Is it just a file size issue? To me, the 14 bit files are just so much smoother and richer. I'll take the larger files if it means better files.
Like:
The ability to use the wonderful 10-22 and 17-55 EF-S lenses.
It's battery consumption.
The anti-dust system.
The menu system.
Dislike:
The tiny viewfinder. I hate the crap factor.
The inability to move the spot metering to the active AF sensor.
The LCD screen. Pretty much useless when you enlarge the picture.

I'm using it as a backup for my 1D bodies at weddings.
What I dislike is the ease with which the shooting mode dial can be knocked off its setting when switching between cameras on a shoot. Odds on it will go onto auto and I end up with JPEGs instead of RAW.
What I do like about it is the auto ISO feature. I'm always forgetting to switch my 1D back to a lower ISO after walking out of the church.

After a lot of "over-thinking," I upgraded from the 20D to the 40D a couple weeks ago and I LOVE IT.
Pro's
~ I get great tack sharp images, and fabulous color.
~ I love having the auto cleaning sensor
~ It feels great in my hands - weight, shape, etc.
~ After having the god awful loud shutter sound on my 20D, the 40D is sooo much quieter. I feel much more stealth now, and not so intrusive...
~ The large display is great too
~ Auto focus for fast moving objects has been great so far
Con's
~ Nothing really... though the battery door seems a little flimsy...?
It's a much better camera than the 20D in almost every way IMO, but the AI servo performance doesn't appear to be much better and it's more sensitive to exposure for noise.
Standouts:
VF much better, LCD much better, although too low in res
Menu system and My menus and three C settings,
Speed, shutter, low light AF, Live View, RGB histogram
- Nice firm and responsive handling
- Feels solid rock in hand and gives you a confidence boost
- Attracts more ladies' gaze and looks at me when on the streets with it
- More attention grabber (look at me babes, what I have now!): babe magnet?
- Very excited with it and very happy to use it in public
I Hate
- A little more expensive that I would have liked
- Only 3" size, could be larger
dislike: the dirtiest camera i've ever owned. dirt seems to be under the AA filter. for the life of me i can't clean and get rid of spots. just purchased in Sept. will be taking this filthy camera to Irvine very soon.
- I don't have one, and could use one, because it's a significant improvement over 20D in terms of buffer and AI servo mode. The numerous enhancements are nice as well.
- by the time I'll be buying the new body, Canon will cram even more pointless megapixels into this class of bodies
Better autofocus in low light. I know some people have complained that the focus was not as good but I still own my 20D and my 40D is way better.
I love the new menu. Again, others like the older 20D menu system but the 40D menu is so much like my MKIII menu system which makes switching between bodies much easier!
Brighter viewfinder!! Sure it's a crop camera but the 40D viewfinder is much brighter than the 20D before it.
My menu!! Again, nice to be able to configure a menu of my most useful functions in ONE place so I don't hae to navigate between sub menus!
Better feel. The camera feels more solid than my 20D. The material feels closer to my MKIII bodies exterior.
On board flash control with the 580EXII. Once you get used to using it it beats pushing buttons on the flash itself. Again, like my MKIII.
Improved auto white balance. If it's a money shoot, I use custom white balance with my Expodisc but when shooting casual around friends and family I find the auto white balance is much improved over the 20D. I compared the auto settings between the MKIII, 40D, and 20D. The MKIII was the best, closely followed by the 40D, and the 20D was by far the worse in indoor room lighting.
Live View!! I love it. Enough said!
Anti dust!! So far I have yet to clean my 40D where I found the 20D would pick up a lot of dust on the sensor. The system seems to be working which is a big plus for me.
Dislikes:
LCD could be better! I don't use my LCD to pixel peep but an improved LCD screen could not cost Canon much more to include in their cameras.
Direct print button! For gods sake Canon, listen to your customers and get rid of this button. I for one have NEVER used this button on any of my Canon bodies and would either prefer a useful programmable button that could be assigned a function or nothing at all!!
