p.1 #1 · info for b/w with spash of color

Newbie here. Anyone care to share with me how you get a splash of color in a black/white photo.
I love the b/w photos, where one item is in color, such as a flower, batter's glove, a piece of ribbon on a little girls dress..etc.

I do not have photo shop. I do have Aperture, and IPhoto. Is there a program I can download? Would love to get photoshop, but maybe next year, just bought my first set of lights... (I'm so excited to use them)

I did not know where to post, but figured the b/w experts would know best.

Thank you,
Toni

the definition you are looking for is "selective color". you need an image editor that allows selections to accomplish that. photoshop elements 6 for mac would be your least expensive choice.

the full install of photoshop CS3 is available through online EDU stores and campus bookstores for about $345. you just have to have someone who is a student id involved. (the version i use is for a third grader, so i need to improve my work : ) best...skip

If I can add a bit to Skip's comments... proceducing a selective color image can be accomplished with software that allows layers. If you have that (and I'm hoping Aperture does), then you would stack a color layer and a b/w layer. Next you would mask (prefered) or alternatively erase, the portions of the top layer where you wanted let the lower layer be seen. As skip said, this is probably best done with "selection" tools. Best wishes. -Art

You may want to check out Paint.NET (free!!) http://getpaint.net as it has layers, though possibly not masking (yet).

Try The GIMP

It's open source freely distributed software (just like Paint.NET) and it is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux/UNIX.

GIMP has the full set, layering, masking, filters, and so on. It takes a bit of getting used to, finding your way around is difficult at first, just finding the locations of all the tools, but it works great and it's free.

+1 for the GIMP - free and still really useful, I use it for all my PP work (I'm not Pro though).
