p.1 #1 · #290: The End of Winter

An ending can also be a new beginning! This is Spring's first sprout - Bleeding Heart, Dicentra spectabilis. The green in the background is last summer's moss, not leaves! We still have snow on the shady side of the house, but on this side the warmth of the sun is stimulating new growth.

Hi Cal,

Absolutely gorgeous shot of a young bleeding heart. I love the water droplets you have captured as well. Just a great image that clearly speaks the end of winter to me. Good luck this week.

Very nice, spring is the best time of the year to get shots of new sprouting flowers, good luck

Great use of colors and DoF to portray new life and the end of winter. Wish we had stuff growing here. I'm starring out my window at a fresh 5 inches of snow.

A great shot,
Chad

Thanks for the nice comments, Steve, Norm, Chad and Flibble! I hadn't used my EFS60mm f/2.8 macro for quite a while after getting the 180mm, and had forgotten what a nice job it can do. I was thinking of selling it, but I guess I'll keep it after all!

Tack sharp Cal! Did you reflect or fill? It really pops! I'd hang on to that lense.

Thank you, Mike! This was taken with the MT-24EX Twin Lite and two Gary Fong Puffer diffusers. The Twin Lite works well in general but it causes corresponding twin highlights as in each water droplet here. I often use the 580EX with a Lumiquest Ultrasoft diffuser, but that light can be too flat. I prefer to work with a tripod and natural reflected/diffused light, but in rainy weather, handheld with flash gets me a photo without standing around getting soaked! Everything is a compromise...
