I bought a Hartblei tilt/shift lens second hand a few weeks ago and the company that sold it to me said that it was a Contax 645 mount. Not knowing much about medium format mounts, I ordered a contax/yashica to canon adapter over the internet only to find out that it wasn't what I needed(too small). I'm a little lost about what kind of mount it is, so I thought that someone here might know if they saw a picture of it. It looks like it might be a Hasselblad, but I don't really know.
the contax / yashica is a 35mm camera mount, the contax 645 is a medium format camera. there isnīt an adapter that letīs you use the c645 lenses on canon yet.
The lens register, or flange to sensor distance, for Contax 645 is 0.7mm greater than for Mamiya 645, so it might be possible to modify a M645 to EOS adapter to put the C645 lens on an EOS body. The clear inner diameter on a M645 body mount is about 62mm and the flange-to-flange opening diameter is about 64.7mm. If you live near Halifax, maybe we could get together and see if it "sort-of" fits on my Mirex M645 to EOS adapter.
I didn't realize that there was a contax/yashica 35mm mount, I figured that there was only one type of Contax mount, the 645 mount. Hence the confusion. I think that I have confirmed that this is a Contax 645 mount by looking at some other photos of Contax 645 lenses on the web. Now I just have to find some way of adapting it to the Canon eos mount. If I can find an old Contax 645 body and Canon ef lens for parts, I might be able to make it myself.
jcolwell,
Thanks for your offer! I'm originally from Halifax, but I live in Toronto now, so I wouldn't be able to meet up. I think that the two 645 mounts are intrinsically different though, because the Contax has four lugs on the bayonet mount and the Mamiya only has three larger lugs. It just wouldn't fit by the looks of things. Correct me if I'm wrong.
One other thing, for those that are looking for a Contax 645 to canon eos adapter themselves, I found some people that are making it starting this year, and others that custom make it. I'll post up the links if anyone interested.
erin: who are you talking about? conurus and zoerk? it is not a good idea to buy a $1000 cam to hack it to be able to mount the SR-lens on a canon. the 45SR is also available as P6 mount lens, or for the mamiya 645. for both eos-adapters are commonly available.
I was speaking to a fellow named Ian at srb-griturn.com. There was another place that I found that was going to start making them this year as well, but I'd have to find the link again.
Obviously I wouldn't take parts from a working camera, defeats the purpose of doing it on the cheap, however an old extension tube or a broken camera might be just fine. That would be a last resort though.
Thanks for the names, conurus and zoerk, I'll take a look and see if they have what I need.
A follow up for anyone interested in this information:
Conorus only seems to do conversion of Contax n-system 35mm lenses to autofocus canon ef mounts. It's nice that they maintain autofocus with the contax lens, but they don't seem to carry Contax 645 to ef mounts.
Zoerk doesn't offer any contax 645 to 35mm options either, but they do offer to do custom mounts, so they might be able to do so if I contacted them.
