I now have a Rebel XT (350D) This is my first DSLR and I have been very happy with it for the last 2 years. I use my 50mm 1.4, 70-200mm 2.8 and 400mm 5.6 the most.
I shoot mainly Wildlife, sports and some portraits.
As I am starting to get more advanced I am finding the FPS and Focus speed to be way to slow.
As much as I would like a 1-series body it's just not in my budget.
I am looking into the 40D. Besides the faster FPS is there a big difference in IQ and AF tracking over the XT?
I have been also very happy is the low noise at ISO 1600 with my XT. Should I expect the same results or better?
I would either get a USED 1 series (preferably a MkII or MkIIN) or a NEW 40D.
The 1-series will blow you away, and should cost only a little -- not much -- more than a 40D.
There are several key advantages to a 1-series body over a 40D (or its predecessors)
1> faster AF, high build quality and 1.3x crop (vs. 1.6x);
2> frame rate is 8.5 (vs. 6+);
3> shutter life is rated much higher (i.e. I have over 400K on my MkII)
40D advantages include:
A> weight and size much is less (especially with no grip on the 40D);
B> sensor has self cleaning, and is slightly upgraded technology due to later release;
C> 3.0" LCD and live view
Only you can decide what is ultimately better for you and your budget...
but lets say buying the better (and more expensive) camera is often cheaper in the long run.
Thanks, I just went to the local camera store to try it out. I will have to get use to the controls but from my XT 2.5fps the 6.5fps seems really fast.
On the buy sell forums there is a 1dmk2 for 1700.00 with 27k clicks. But I can pick up a 40D for 1100.00. I can use the extra 600.00 for some new glass.
I think the Xt to 1D upgrade is alittle over kill for someone not getting paid and is just a hobbist. If I can get nice shots with the xt at only 2.5FPS and slow af I think I'll get some killer shots with the 40D.
judging by your photos i would say your ready to get a better camera body your using the xt to its full potential. You'll notice a huge increase in sports with the autofocus ability. The low iso is also so much better on the 40d than the xt.
I ended up stretching my budget and went from the xt all the way to the Mark III, the 40d did not exist at the time, if the 40d had been out it would of been a very serious consideration.
