p.1 #1 · photoshop alternatives for Linux ?

Hi everyone,
been a long time member/reader, but don't post much.

I'm a big linux user for home and for work.
The only reason i'm sticking with windows is because of Adobe.

Any alternatives for linux ? anybody was able to get cs2/cs3 to run under linux properly and as fast ?

I know all about Gimp, but I find it its just not there yet.. quite the opposite.
I do get some work done in it.. but its not ideal ( raw converters to tiff, then into Gimp )

Cheers!

Um I ran Virtual Box on Kubuntu. Which ran Windoze XP Pro which then ran PS. My only problem is that the page file thing never flushed so the ram kept filling up and making my laptop really slow. And it took a reboot to flush the memory.
Here is a screenshot of what my Linux DT looked like http://faceless-21.deviantart.com/art/My-new-sexy-Linux-desktop-D-64987496

Are you familiar with running Linux? Maybe try using Suse or another distro, they might run virtualbox better...

Good luck! Let me know if you can get it working properly... I myself will try to get another distro installed and let ya know if I can get it working.

I use redhat as well as Kubuntu7.10
i'll give VirtB a try.

I still wish I didn't have to deal with winblows at all.

Take a look at Gimp.

The real drawback with Linux is the fact that there isn't any color management.

Since GIMP 2.4, GIMP has been color aware. GIMP is packages with Linux too. I use Windows, by the way, and have been a GIMP user for well over 5 years. Give it a whirl if you haven't already done so. Yes, PS is more powerful without a doubt (and I have CS2 for those occasions where I need them, mainly with manipulating images in higher bit resolution for the rare occasion where I need it), but GIMP is my main editor by personal choice (mainly since I've been using if for so long) and can tell you that you can pretty much do anything necessary to create a keeper.

lyle - my point is that you can't calibrate, reliably, under linux nor do ICC profiles exist for linux printer drivers.

It's fine that GIMP is color aware but that doesn't help when you're running on linux.

I use ArgyllCMS and a Spyder 2 for calibrating my Linux system and it seems absolutely reliable to me. My main issue with GIMP is the lack of 16 bit editing, and the missing adjustment layers.

Kevin - how do you manage printer profiles?

(just curious really)

For most of my workflow I use LightZone for Linux. It has a working 16bit linear color space.

http://lightzone.wikidot.com/

XnView for its Lanczos interpolation when downsampling for the web.

These are the two best Linux photo sites that I know of:
http://www.linuxphoto.org/index.html - large list of photo apps for Linux
http://jcornuz.wordpress.com/

On color print mangement: http://jcornuz.wordpress.com/2007/12/06/printing-3-printer-color-management/

I use print shops for the few prints that I do. So I just export to their color space profiles and ftp the files to them.

Here is a project that claims to do color managed printing:

I soft proof in GIMP, and just print. I use the ICC profile that came with the printer for the soft proofing. But them my printer is a cheap Canon, so I don't count the results. Using my local pro lab the prints look very close to the screen image.
