p.1 #1 · epson 2400 dark prints

My Epson 2400 is printing too dark. I'm losing shadow detail and can't figure the problem. I've googled this and know it has happened before to other people but can't find the solution.

I'm using all the correct setup letting Photoshop handle color, disabling any color correction from the printer, using the correct paper profiles, and just recalibrated my monitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With your monitor...

Are you calibrating the luminance too or just the colors and color temp? If your monitor is too bright while editing images to taste, it will render a darker print. This is especially true with shadow detail.

LCDs should have a luminance of about 110 cdm2.

Thanks for that tip. When I get a dark environment tonight, I will recalibrate and make those adjustments. I never thought about that.

One other suggestion....prior to printing, softproof your image using the printer profile and make adjustments to suit. I typically add a curves adjustment layer and pull up the brightness and boost saturation of primary colors using a hue/saturation adj layer.

what version of Photoshop and what printer are you using? this is a known problem with Photoshop CS3 and Epson printers and there seems to be no good solution except custom printer profiles.
