My 50 F1.4 was unusable for me at F1.4 (and no better when I got it back from Canon repair). No so sure why this (and some other brands) simple design lens is so dull (low contrast) wide open when my 35 and 24 Ls are fine. I had to buy the 50L for good F1.4 performance. I keep an old model (metal) F1.8 for a more compact alternative. But really the 85 F1.8 is so much better.
