p.1 #1 · Too Tight?

I was going through some old images and revisiting Capture NX too.

Your thoughts - is this too tight? What about skin tones?

Additional C&C also appreciated,

Thanks,

Bob

Hmm, for some reason Exif got lost:

Too tight? Not for me. Nice capture of emotion and the look in his eye.
Critique:very shallow depth of field with the left side of his face appearing sl sharper than the right, left eye sharper than the right. I think with this real shallow DOF you really have to watch the focal plane. Lower left corner of image is quite dark, a bit distracting. Not sure what your options are here. Overall, I like this capture.

Framing is good - not too tight but soft as Scott mentioned.

Suggest turning on center focus, focus on eye, hold down and move to frame then shoot because the eyes should be the spot you focus.

Nice picture.

Thanks Scott & Scott,

First, have no idea why I had the lens wide open since it has a very shallow DOF at f1.8 - should have stopped down a bit.

Second, focus has always been an issue with me - need to practice, practice, practice. In this particular instance, she was confined to a car seat (one of the few cases where she is still) so I had the luxury of time, which I did not use to my advantage.

Thanks again for the comments,

Bob

Framing fine here too. I very much like tightly cropped photos. The focus does not bother me -- the eyes are just so fantastically clear.

The colours of the fabric are not good for me, though. The light pink, blue and green do interfere with the skin tones and the eyes. That's really a bit of a bummer, because if you go B&W, the wonderful blue eyes will be grey... have you tried it/considered it? Or possibly use PS to discolour the bib only?

Cheers,
Jörg

For me this tighter crop is preferable, it gets rid of the light spot of sun on the hair and the ear at the left of the frame which I found distracting.

also helps to add impact to smiling mouth and eyes.

David,

Thanks for the additional cropped version - I agree, funny how we can miss these things and I think it'll ease the issue in toning down the bid slightly.

I'll tackle these later after some bad weather clears out...

Bob

OK, combining for suggested changes:

Bob, I like the final version you posted a lot.
I can imagine it framed on a grandmother's piano, a father's desk or hanging in the family room.

Having the "further" eye the point of focus adds visual interest for me.

Nicely done.
