The competition is definitely getting tougher. Here is my take on the WA...

this is really fantastic. I love the swirls - were you spinning the plate to get that effect? Great lighting, beautiful picture!

This is an awesome shot. The angle, lighting, framing, contrast all show off the drama. Another example of how photography can change the ways we view the simple things, like cake.

A great shot, one of your best in my humble opinion.

Wow, I may have done something right for a change. If it gets your attention then I know something is going in the right direction. It has been a struggle staying with the competition watching so many fantastic shots come through with tons of new competition. I recently got the Photoshop CS3 Extended and starting to mess with that so it has shown me things that I didn't know before. All I can do is try to keep learning from guys like you...... Thanks so much.

Jason, no critique? You usually find something which I am sure you can, for me to improve....Giving it a break huh? Even though the shot was taken with the lighting effect, I am still learning from CS3 and got you on my mind ready to call when I trip up.

Thanks so much for the warm comments. The story behind this shot and how it was done started when I got dinner last night from KFC.. They had a 2 dollar chocolate cake with icing and I thought I would get it for desert. When I tasted it, I was shocked at how good it was but so cheap and simple, so that gave me the idea of how to duplicate the same in this shot. The swirls are just Hersheys syrup put into a sandwich bag and cut the tip so that my girlfriend could draw, then used toothpicks to run streaks out of that. Placed the cake in a position, found a decent angle, placed my wireless flash behind the plate but pretty close and shot it. I did some photoshop to smoothen it out (not sure of all the steps as I was just clicking) Cropped and posted! But I think I got close to the concept of making this look more expensive and suprising just like the 2 dollar cake did to me

Glad you like it.

Aww Chad, one of the best? You got the creativity shot of the week! Ha ha...I do feel this is a decent shot and captured what I was going for as I Stated in Allison's response. I do agree with your statement of how photography can change the way we view normal things. I am just trying to learn from great guys like yourself and many others up here. Maybe one day I can be more consistent and maybe even get back into the finals. Thanks so much as I always look to your comments

Very nicely done, if this was on a desert menu I would definetly be tempted.

oooh - I like it! It looks distressingly deliciously sweet.

I'm constantly impressed by the level of creativity and effort goes into the posts here, it's really inspiring. The forethought in particular. I'm much more of a "see something appealing and shoot" kind of person, I haven't gotten to the "have an image in my mind and make it happen" place yet.

Thanks Carrol. Seems like I need to attempt more of this style. Its so hard at this point with my newborn and all my work with music and my business that I rarely get a chance to do more than a simple "decent" shot of a particular object. This one had more of a story that helped me along. Glad you like it.

Thanks Norm. I would be tempted as well and setting this up, had that in mind when creating the "mood" .....Thanks for the comment

I love how you put it. "distressingly delicious" The level of competition has definitely increased over the past few months and so many new entries and people joining in on the great challenge and fun of the WA. I understand what you mean by shooting something cool. I came out my first time and Won by shear luck with my "battleship" shot (in my gallery) but ever since then, I have yet to return to the finals. You find that there is so much more to the shot than just point and shoot. The great ones usually have a story or meaning behind it. A plan and then execute, so I to am working on that. This image is the tip of that sort of iceberg. Keep on thinking, you will hit and miss a bunch, but it soon will start to get better. Thanks for your comments

All best wishes,

Endre
