p.1 #1 · Wedding Album - critique

This isn't my first album, but one that I really love - it helped that they were such a fun couple and lovely to work with.

I really enjoy these shots and the layout! I especially enjoy the detail shots, they're very good and help flesh out the album a lot. Only part that bothers me is the second row, with the jumping groomsmen - I wish it wasn't partially transparent/faded - it looks very flat to me as a result, and I don't see a good reason to leave it like that.

Besides that, I love them all. May I ask how you went about making this layout (software, etc)? Also, what was your lighting technique for the outdoor group shots?

Thanks!

beautiful job!! nice layout...your images capture the spirit of the day beautifully.

just a couple of images bother me...the shot of the men jumping....is it desaturated or did you lower the opacity of the image? its just wishy washy looking to me and doesnt fit with the page because of it.

some of the black & whites could use a bit more contrast, but maybe that's my taste.

the blue toned b&w doenst go at all, i think i would return it to colour

+1 on fixing the groomsmen jumping

Looks like a lovely affair - you Brits have some nice wedding sites!

I have to ask about 'the signing' - do couples really sign with both hands on the pen or is that pose totally made up for the photographer?

I use photojunction for my software - not the easiest and has a TON of bugs, but I have stuck with it and am reluctant to change now. For the outside shots during the day it was on camera flash straight up with the white bounce card just to add catch lights to the eyes. For the night shots with the couple i had off camera flash on remote trigger and on camera flash - was just having a play to be honest.

I completely agree, but the couple had the choice of the colour and the blue tone and chose this one, so i just do as they like

I do agree (now its been sent to the printers after the couple's approval - doh!) about the jumping shot being desaturated. I'm thinking of ordering this as a big sample album for the studio so will definitely change the jumping shot and blue tone one.

Thanks for the input

! Completely made up for the photographer as its always a seller in the album and for parents. You also set it up, take the photo then ask friends and family if they'd like to take the shot, and it keeps them happy and they see you as a nice photographer for setting the shot up for them!

generally a nice capture however would try a little more consistency on the colors are you custom W/B or Auto W/B ?
Some of the B/W images are overblown and lack detail.
A general touch up on the brides back on layout 4 it looks awful with the blemishes and spots ...

Fair enough, i do normally touch up blemishes, but these are moles, therefore there the whole time. unless they ask me to remove something that's permenant I don't, otherwise they may feel offended that i think they shouldn't be part of the image. I certainly would notice if someone airbrushed out all the moles on a picture of my husband.

spots and stray hairs get the fix instantly - and if a bride asks for a bulge to be removed, then thats done too, but only if asked.

Very nice album - your clients must be very happy!

Out of ignorance, mind if I ask why there are no images of the ceremony itself? I thought I recalled reading that some faiths do not allow shooting during the ceremony (LDS?). Just curious, thanks.

Mike, there ARE some shots of the ceremony, P6 & P7.
This is not a church service but takes place at an authorised venue. Some officiants allow the photographer a little freedom to move around etc while others give you a spot to stand during the ceremony and you have to snatch what you can.
Hope you didn't mind me jumping in there Natasha

No worries - question answered.

At this wedding (as with 99% of them) I was given a spot and told to stay, not that there was any room to move around anyway. I was just glad to be close to the front as I'm never happy just stuck at the back.

The images in the whole album are chosen by the couple too, and they only chose 3 of the actual ceremony, so it obviously wasn't the bit they wanted lots of in the album, whereas they chose a lot of romantic shots.

On your cake shot, reverse their positions.....always put the bride in front....the groom is so tall that he overpowers the petite bride..........and we want to show off the brides dress.........

Good job. The uncontrasty jumping shot jumped out at me, too.
