I'm new to the forum (obviously by my post count of now 1) but have been always looking through the site for a couple years.
Jason, how were you metering for this image and others from this shoot? I used to do studio lighting a long time ago with my 35mm setup, but am now moving back into it (indoors and out) with digital. I also am planning on ordering a couple AB800's and softboxes this month.
Any tips for outdoor shots like this would be great! I can't wait to get back into off camera flashes and strobes!

Hi Spencer, are you using regular flash or other more powerful light source? The first shot was at f/10 so I am thinking you probably using a more powerful light source.
580EX thru white Westcott Convertible Double-fold Umbrella - 2ft left of model
32" circular white reflector - 1ft right of model
Red wall lit by incandescent bulb -
A little different than what everyone else is posting, but this was done with one light.
Used a single AB-800 in a medium photoflex softbox. The center of the box was masked off with some foamcore making it into effectively 2 small strip boxes. The box was placed behind the glassware, and moved till the slivers of light became the most pleasing.

Very creative! More people need to think outside the box. Good work!
I think I'll try this sometime soon. BTW I only steal from the best!

Wow, sorry haven't been following this thread for a while. As far as metering, I don't ever meter any of my shots. I don't have a light meter or the slightest idea how to use one. Basically after shooting enough with my lights, I've come to get a feel for how they react in certain outdoor situations. I just set this up knowing that I wanted the sun to be the backlight and that would cause her face to be in shadow, so I set up the strobe right in front of her and started at half power, and then just tweaked it from there. Basically, I just pay attention to my histogram and how things look on my lcd.

For this shot, I used a single vivitar 285hv through a white umbrella for three different exposures of my car and then combined them together in PS. I guess it's technically a one light setup, even though it mimics that of a multiple light setup .
