Rebecca - Congrats on the purchase. I'm sure you will love the lens. I also have the 70-200VR and find myself grabbing the 70-300VR alot. It is a fantastic bang for the buck lens that is soooo much easier to carry around. I have never been disappointed with the sharpness of the lens. It is a lens you will find many uses for.
great shots guys. I never enjoyed the lens enough to keep it for long as my 18-200 Vr did a similar job at overlapping focal lengths. I felt it wasnt quite long enough or fast enough for me, but what it does do it does very well as everyone is saying.
I got my lens today! Unfortunately, it was just delivered so it's too dark to really test it out. I love KEH... the lens is in beautiful condition.
Does anyone know where I can find the instruction manual online? Or a site that explains the VR system? It's my first time using a VR lens, so I need to figure this all out
I'm pretty sure on the Nikon site (USA for sure) it DOES explain the VR system well. As for it being dark..............COME ON that's NO excuse! I play with mine in the living room all the time with the built in flash of the D300 and find it astounding. Just play...........you can get serious when the sun comes out in the morning. :-)
VR is easy to use. Turn it on at the normal setting when you are doing hand held shots or on at active when you are doing hand held shots that you are moving around more than normal. Turn it off when you have it set up on a tripod because it will blur your pictures (at least in my experience).
Yep... I did a little reading and figured out the difference between normal and active modes. It's also pretty cool that the lens is supposed to detect panning. I didn't test it out much tonight, but so far I'm extremely impressed.

Anyone know how much I can get for a used 80-200?
! That's exactly what happened to me. That stupid consumer lens performed so well and carried so nicely that my 80-200/2.8 was gathering dust.. Finally sold it.
In all fairness, the two lenses have different applications and really are not interchangeable but an amateur like myself just doesn't need to pack arounf the heavier and shorter range lens.
Now the 300mmf4 is a different story... I can totally justify it

I shoot professionally, but 99% of my work is product photography in the studio, with the other 1% being the occasional portrait. The only reason I kept the 80-200 was for the occasional time that I wanted something longer and at the time that I purchased it none of the other "consumer" zooms could even come close as far as image quality (and I couldn't justify the 70-200vr). I think the 70-300 will serve me just fine for the 2-3 times a year that I shoot at longer focal lengths!
Sorry to hijack this thread. With the new lens... Do you notice a difference from the previous version of the 70-300G non ED/VR? I got it with my D50 and reading this thread I just dusted it off and was amazed at the quality it was giving me on the D300. I will definitely use this lens more but wondering if the optics improve on the VR version? Any thoughts?
EDIT: Wow, i just read up on the new one. Its a VR and AF-S with a SWM. Jeez. With the increased ISO on the D300 this lens might be my next purchase for my trip to Yosemite for those quick bird shots. Wow. I am really impressed.
Ok, I know this is asking alot of this lens, but what about focus speed? I really want a 300 2.8 but as I'm not made of money and don't play the lottery......
And I'm talking tee ball speed here folks.
thanks,
Greg
