Went outside this morning to take some pictures when it was in the -30F range. Luckily, there was next to no wind, so it wasn't too bad for the 10 or so minutes I was out there.
My 1D-Mark III performed flawlessly in that time.

Thanks Travis. Dang -30F is pretty cold. Good thing it wasn't windy! John also has a 1D3 but I don't think he was using it that day he got the odd 1ds3 results.
This is probably a one-off problem, and kudo's to Canon for doing the right thing by replacing the Camera. I have an early 1Ds3 and it has been to -30C a bunch of times with no problems.
could be anything from a defective battery to a defective solder on a circuit board causing the OP's problems. Not really surprising that there are occasional glitches like this given the increasing complexity of camera bodies.
Was a second battery tried? Was the battery warmed (by hand or body) before trying again? That would at least help rule out a battery issue.
It'll be interesting to see canon's response. They could shrug and say it was operating outside recommended temperature ranges and is therefore not their problem. Or they could actually try to fix it (although how they'd replicate it is anyone's guess).

You're conflating two cameras. A different forum member is getting a replacement 1Ds3 for front-focus issues.
