p.1 #1 · hummingbird self-grooming contortions

Last week at Berkeley Aquatic Park, I had a very willing hummingbird do more than the usual pose, as he went through his self-grooming contortions long enough in the same spot to let me capture this whole series:

I just love hummers. We have 4 feeders up for them even now.

Allen, my favorites are # 4 & 7.

Wow, what a series! The positions are fabulous. Isn't it amazing what can be captured when you have to time and patience? Well done on these and thanks for sharing them.

Hey, nice stuff here. I know every one of those positions as I've seen Anna's do it as well. They're so funny the way they contort themselves into so many different positions. It's amazing how many unique shots you can get of one little animal, isn't it?

Btw, I especially like the beak detail in shots 3 and 5. Well done

Thanks, Rob. I was especially happy with these since it was only the 2nd time shooting with my new (for me) used 500L f4.5 lens (and 1st time with a 1.4x tc on that lens).

500 f/4.5 lens? Not f/4?

Amazing series, all so well photographed. Who knew hummingbirds were so high maintenance? Very nice job.

Rob: yes, f4.5 (older, predecessor to the f4).

Thanks, Tim - one of the comments I liked from another forum: "get that hummer a mirror!"

Thanks, Steve. This one was unusually cooperative. Usually, they only hang around and stay close when I DON'T have a camera and lens at the ready.

Thanks, Susan. They're great bird subjects, b/c they like to perch on the very top of trees & branches, so you can get fairly clear shots.
