No, that's the real deal, Karl. It didn't stay like that for very long. The problem was that the precipitation kept coming and going, and when it wasn't actually raining/snowing, what little spray there was hitting the windshield would evaporate very quickly (due to the heat from the defogger) leaving just the dirt and salt. To avoid going through an entire reservoir of washer fluid in ten minutes, I took the heat off the windshield by turning the defogger off, which left the spray liquid long enough to swipe with the wipers without too much streaking. Of course, once the freezing rain started up again, the above happened quite quickly. Turning the defogger back on full blast again got rid of the ice in a hurry. Plus it looks a lot worse than it actually was since I wasn't focusing my eyes on the messy windshield. Still a pain in the gluteous maximus, though!
Those are rubber covered wipers, btw, but they do have the standard arms.
