p.8 #1 · How many leaving Canon?

What's odd about it .. I HATED HAVING TO MOVE TO CANON.

I still deplore Canon's total lack of responsibility and loose manufacturing standards.

Given their history, they are the LAST company I'd LIKE to support.

But given the Nikon situation six years ago, and Canon being the last manufacturer for me to try, I was totally blown away by their products for a number of years, my opinion of them has never changed.

But facts are facts, when I moved to Canon first I had the BEST EQUIPMENT IN THE WORLD. Damm, but it had to be Canon, why could not someone else have been able to make such great gear, I never wanted to be with Canon, I never liked Canon and still don't.

The difference today is I no longer consider myself using the best gear in the world. Sadly we are seeing how the boot up the rear end of Canon is seemingly having no effect whatsoever on them.

I want the Canon back that said they wanted to dominate the world and they were making the machines to do it with.

If I were you, I'm just going to dump all Canon gears and buy Nikon ..it's very simple...yes, you'll be losing money but it's better than having that "HATE" feeling...it could kill you!. Plus you could live longer just by doing that.

Most people who switch brand now switched from another brand to Canon before. Its only natural that they look out for other stuff. We all want to go home somehow, dont we?

Not always true...first camera I bought was a FTb QL (two eventually). Long before that I was using my dad's Canon rangefinder sort of thingy with a photoelectric eye to work the meter......my brother still uses that when he goes camping!

it doesn't seem to be much of a debate, then. if you see no good reason to stay with canon, and you detest the brand name... then run, don't walk, to your nearest nikon dealer.

i wish you the best of luck, comrade.

I'm staying. I still believe it's the photogapher (and the lens) that matters most...

I have read that it will be some time before the 5D mk2 is available in the UK because so many pre-release orders have been placed in the USA so that's where the cameras are being shipped.

Why should Canon clean up it's act when the lemmings are out in force...American lemmings it seems!

PS. Guess the credit crunch is over then...over there anyway!!

Naw, you have to have emotion in your life.

And sometimes it's like an American's choice. More Bush, A Woman or and American African. Now, which one is Canon in this parody?

speaking of which, i'd like to do a systematic analysis of both cameras. the problem is that i don't have the same lens i can throw on both cameras. however, i could probably track down the canon 50 f/1.8 from a friend, which should be roughly

Thanks for the info - appreciated. I think I'll borrow a 5D and do my own comparison as well. I don't want to make an expensive mistake!

Anyone who reads and puts any value in DPREVIEW comments, reviews etc., is quite frankly a moron. Just let me know when you leave so I can purchase your gear at pennies on the dollar. Try getting your Nikon repaired sometime - serious pain in the ass and nearly impossible should your warranty run out.

Yes, well its just as well. If Canon think they are going to sell many 5D2s in the UK for a whopping £2300 they are going to be disappointed. Interestingly in the UK the D700 is much cheaper, around £1645. Apparently Canon don't like us, and Nikon want their market share. Its difficult to come to any other conclusion. The new 24L is being marketed at a massive £1299, seems to me that Canon really aren't interested in the UK market any more. With the pound sliding like crazy its highly likely that I won't be buying ANY new camera equipment here in 2009, food and mortgage come first.

Canon can ask whatever they want for their kit in the UK, but we don't have to buy it. Anyone know the Japanese word for "recession"?

Sent my D1x away ~ years ago now like, remember. It came back still broken ~ in fact I'll say here that EVERY single piece of Nikon gear I ever had, BROKE!

I've new lenses in the bin, having totally lost confidence in Nikon to repair, my film scanner, the list is near endless.

I sent it away again ~ each time €200 shipping ... madness. Then it was sent back and was lost. I had to track it down myself, two weeks later I found it, and yes it was still broken.

So I totally agree with Nikon repair.

Contrast that with a non warranty fall and smash, 1DMKII /whatever flash it was and a lens I can't remember. I used Canon's account to send it UPS paying some €80 and they sent the lot back via UPS to my hands ~ all fixed for something like €700 in THREE DAYS.

NPS, eat your heart out!

'Erm, that may be your story, but in Ireland [and presumably in mainland UK too] they threw themselves over cliffs ... to their deaths .... inexplicably.

But I nitpick.

Not leaving. Did buy a D700 and a few Nikon lenses have the G adapter on order, already have a Cameraquest N-EOS adapter. I'll let the systems coexist. My loyalty is to photography not brands, photo equipment is just tools to get the picture, If I have a Canon lens, Nikon lens or Zeiss lens on a Canon body, or if it is manual focus or a Nikon body with Nikon or Zeiss lens what I care about is the picture. So all my systems can coexist.

Don't worry the USA is a whole heap of financial trouble, far worse than just about any other country with a real economy. $23 trillion in total debt - things can only get worse as China can't prop them up forever.
