Please write a book when you get the time (if you haven't already). I was spellbound, and can honestly say that is the best post I have ever read in my life. I seldom read anything with substance in a public forum. You have got a story here that needs to be told.

I do not have the words to express my joy and graditude for all of your interest in this unique thread! So much more to follow and in the news today comes this dire warning about the village of Kivalina.. Oh how I love the sound of that word!

I named one of my daughters. after the name of this village, only because I just love the sound of that "name" or village. It (to me) rings sweetly the sound of a womans name.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A tiny Alaska village eroding into the Arctic Ocean sued two dozen oil, power and coal companies Tuesday, claiming that the large amounts of greenhouse gases they emit contribute to global warming that threatens the community's existence.

http://majikimaje.com/images/kivalina.jpg

Waves crash against the seawall in Kivalina, Alaska, in September.

The city of Kivalina and a federally recognized tribe, the Alaska Native village of Kivalina, sued Exxon Mobil Corporation, eight other oil companies, 14 power companies and one coal company in a lawsuit filed in federal court in San Francisco.

Kivalina is a traditional Inupiat Eskimo village of about 390 people about 625 miles northwest of Anchorage. It's built on an 8-mile barrier reef between the Chukchi Sea and Kivalina River.

Sea ice traditionally protected the community, whose economy is based in part on salmon fishing plus subsistence hunting of whale, seal, walrus, and caribou. But sea ice that forms later and melts sooner because of higher temperatures has left the community unprotected from fall and winter storm waves and surges that lash coastal communities.

"We are seeing accelerated erosion because of the loss of sea ice," City Administrator Janet Mitchell said in a statement. "We normally have ice starting in October, but now we have open water even into December so our island is not protected from the storms."

Relocation costs have been estimated at $400 million or more.

A spokesman for Exxon Mobil, Gantt Walton, said the company was reviewing the lawsuit and had no immediate comment on it.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Kivalina by two nonprofit legal organizations -- The Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment and the Native American Rights Fund -- plus six law firms.

Reached by phone in Boston, attorney Matt Pawa said other lawsuits have been filed seeking damages from global warming, but this is the first one that has a "discretely identifiable victim."

Damage to Kivalina from global warming has been documented in official government reports by the Army Corps of Engineers and the General Accounting Office, Pawa said.

The lawsuit invokes the federal common law of public nuisance, and every entity that contributes to the pollution problem harming Kivalina is liable, Pawa said. "You can sue them one at a time or some subset of them," he said.

The lawsuit also accuses some of the defendants of a conspiracy to mislead the public regarding the causes and consequences of global warming. The suit was filed in California because that's where many of the defendants are located or do business, Pawa said.

Without commenting on the lawsuit, Exxon Mobil's Walton said the company takes the issue of climate change seriously.

"Exxon Mobil is taking action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our operations, supporting research into technology breakthroughs and participating in constructive dialogues on policy options with NGOs, industry and policy makers," he said.

The other oil companies named were BP PLC, BP American, BP Products North America, Chevron, Chevron USA, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Shell Oil.

Also named were Peabody Energy, a major coal producer, and power companies AES, American Electric Power, American Electric Power Services, DTE Energy, Duke Energy, Dynegy Holdings, Edison International, MidAmerican Energy Holdings, Mirant Corp., NRG Energy, Pinnacle West Capital, Reliant Energy, The Southern Co. and Xcel Energy.

http://majikimaje.com/barrow/baby.jpg

Erosion is a major issue in ALL of the coastal villages. Pt. Hope needs to be moved again, Kivalina, Shismareff, are on that same endangered list.

Did you know?? that above the Arctic circle, you can jump in the water in the winter time, and enjoy a hot bath - OUTSIDE !!! Yes !! we have "hot springs' near the village of Buckland !!

There is just so much that people from the real world do not know or realize about the Arctic. This thread, and its "sister" thread of (Arctic Models @ 30 below zero) will show, explain and teach you much about this far frozen north area in Alaska that has so very few people that call this frozen paradise home !

Seeing your images brings back some great memories of the Arctic, I was fortunate enough to spend ten of the best years of my life in Alaska, while I was based out of Anchorage I traveled all across the North Slope, Oliktok, Pt. Lonley, Kaktovik, People don't really understand how much of a different world the Arctic is, that just going out for a day trip taking photos that you better pack a survival bag, I never went anywhere with out a survival bag, knife, and rifle. These are the tools that you use in everyday life. What amazed me the most about the natives, is that they are so connected with the earth, there is no waste or want ant disregard for nature, it is the exact opposite everything revolves around nature and the balance with it.
I was lucky enough to witness a whale harvest in Barrow, and again to see a whole town come together and work as a unit to butcher the animal from the elders who would oversee to the infants who would watch with curiosity. The natives that I came across in my time there were some of the friendliest, nicest people that I have ever met, if you respect them (with nothing more than common curtseys) then they would give you that same respect right back, a lot of people think that these people don’t know what they are talking about but there is a reason why these people hold their elders in such high regard, it is no easy task growing old in that environment, and these people are surviving on knowledge that has been passed to them for thousands of years, and your stories and photos really capture that. Great Job!

I did what you suggested Ontime I googled it, and I read what it said in the many articles, All I read was a bunch of arguments about the subject.

Too complicated for me to understand or to figure out. I like simple, simple is easy to understand. This is why I choose such a "simple" lifestyle'.
http://majikimaje.com/WIND/smile.jpg
I have lived in 'the real world" and I just do not like the manner in which people treat people. Too many people think they are better than the other person.

From one end of this country to the other, The same situation exists at work, most people are too busy trying to back-stab the other person to advance their careers.

This is nothing new.. it has been going on for 20 years. People now-a-days take their life into their hands,.. on a daily basis.. .. .. just to go.. to school, or shopping.

ALL because of..........."hate' !!! - jealousy - envy !

I know I made the right choice. I left that all behind, so many decades ago.

There is only ONE REASON. these people are so united with each other, in village after village. All of these villages are ONE. and there is a very simple explanation of what keeps these people so close and united as one.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/prayer.jpg

and that is the POWER... of "praying together" !!

Giving thanks to the CREATOR !!

Cameras, cameras lurk everywhere now in the village. Everyone has a camera,
everyone is a photographer now. The whole world is learning how to create.
some do it better than others.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/smile.jpg

Walking around the village creating photographs is something I enjoy doing no matter where I am living at the time.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/meat.jpg

Caribou meat, - Paniqtaq - dried jerky !! Delicous. This is how it is prepared, let it hang, and dry out, all summer long. Sorry I don't know what the recipie is.

I first got into photography in October of 69. I was going on a date, to fly a kite.!!
I was still in the Army, and I met a girl and we became close friends. and the name of this girl you just will not believe.. Her real name was "Shirley Hurley" !!

That is as funny sounding as Leslie Presley !! I had borrowed a camera from a friend in the barracks. He showed me how to use this contraption, as I had no idea how to use a 35 mm SLR. When I returned from that date. I asked the person, what do we do with this film ? Bring it to the PX ? He laughed and said. no we will do it ourselves.. BOOM! I was hooked big time, obsessed and overwhelmed. I just gotta learn how to do this. I got bored with b&w very quickly.

I wanted to learn how to process color and everyone said it can't be done at home it is too expensive and too difficult. I am always up for that type of challenge.

If someone says to me that can't be done, or you can't do that.. well I just gotta prove them wrong.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/crew.jpg

All of the whaling captains in each and every village, Design and purchase Jackets for their crew members. The Patkotak Sisters here in Barrow are very famous, They have made 3 or 4 albums of songs, It doesn't matter which village your visiting, These songs are heard in almost every household.

They are also a family of expert master carvers & basket makers.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/eagle.jpg

This Eagle sold for over $5,000, the detail in this carving out of one tusk is remarkable. It was given away as a "gift" to Jeslie K. as his term for Mayor was finished and he choose not to run again as illness was the main reason.

Walking around the village, especially a new village as in Barrow is exciting, you just never know what your going to see.

http://majikimaje.com/brw/caribou.jpg

I could have sworn I saw that animal "blink" at me. !!

eek!.. erie thing to come upon unawares.

We are just not used to seeing stuff like this in front of our homes. eh ?

Whale bones are everywhere in this village and in all whaing villages (9).

Kivalina, Pt. Hope, Wainwright, Barrow, Kaktovik, and down south, Savaunga, Gambell, Little Diaomede & Wales

http://majikimaje.com/brw/play.jpg

Vertabrae Bones from A Bowhead Whale. These are sold, or used in Arts & crafts. what do you make out of something like this ??

a very nice bone mask !

http://majikimaje.com/brw/bmask.jpg

this sold for 1,500 bux. My son Mark made this.

The skull of a bowhead whale

http://majikimaje.com/brw/skull.jpg

http://majikimaje.com/brw/closer-skull.jpg

There are about 1/2 dozen of these exhibits around town and at the college some 5 miles away.

Remember Will Rogers ? & Wiley Post. Unfortunately they met their end in Barrow when their plane crashed.

Here is a portion of the wing from that same plane.

http://majikimaje.com/brw/plane-wing.jpg

There is a rather large monument in town for those two well known celebrities.

I will dig it out and post it in the next post. (If I can find it).

Ever wonder how far it is, to the south pole from Barrow ??

http://majikimaje.com/brw/directions.jpg

By the way, it is 50 degrees out when these images were created last August. Yuk I hate the heat. it is just so uncomfortable.

http://majikimaje.com/brw/Iseeyou.jpg
Notice the "belt' that Besty is wearing, this is how to carry a child inside of the parky, the belt allows the baby to sit and not fall out of the bottom of the parky.
http://majikimaje.com/brw/baby.jpg

Between Barrow & Browerville, there sits these very old abandoned boats.

http://majikimaje.com/brw/oldboats.jpg

Someday, someone will fix them all up and paint them good as new.. ha ha ha!

don't hold your breath on that one.

http://majikimaje.com/brw/inspiration.jpg

Believe it or not: Walrus usiq are very expensive and much sought after all over the world. you see them all over the place in Anchorage

Here in this arts& crafts showcase are two usiq's. They are on the lower two shelves on the right side.. that lazy S.

those are walrus usiq. (oosick), it is IVORY, it is a "bone" from the Penis of a walrus !!!

http://majikimaje.com/brw/usiq.jpg

Yes, people collect these expensive "things" !!!

The black boat in the top right is made entirely out of baleen from the bowhead whale.

Well, the month of March is upon us and that is what we have to do now, March out to the ocean ice and begin chopping a trail for as many miles as it takes for us to reach the place where the ice will crack & open.
http://majikimaje.com/WIND/chop.jpg

Final preparations are being made to all of the equpment and it is time to go whaling again.!!

One of the very first most important things that will be done, is to have the "blessing of the Umiaq's". Anything can happen, this is a dangerous place, and you have to obey all of the rules*. even so,, were in a land of frozen unpredictability, out on that ice.

I have heard people talk of stories in which during the middle of the dark night, (early April) asleep in the tent and the sound of the ice cracking woke everyone up only to see the crack getting wider, from right inside their tent. All of a sudden, there is no such thing as "cold" it is time to hustle and run !!

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/bless.jpg

Two of my very close friends that I haven't been able to spend time talking to you about is Issac & Sally Killigvuk. hmm? yes, that is the same "word" used when we have to evacuate the Ice, in a mass panic, 700 + people running at once for a mad dash to safety, all at once. (done gathering items) in 15 minutes, moving, exiting a mass exodus in a silent choreographed type "ballet" !! That is tons of stuff to move, including children, babies, machinery, etc. I wish there was a way to photograph this from above, but planes are not allowed anywhere near the lead or the ocean ice on the south side when they are out there whaling. Planes must approach from the north side of the beach. Any excessive type noise will spook or scare the animals, this is why these people are "hidden" in the ice. Certain colors are not allowed down at the lead opening. and red is one of those colors.
But at least twice, each year, during whailng, we have to Killigvuk. These people are always prepared, in a moments time to run.

so again come along and lets go whaling, again & again. It doesn't matter which year it is. it always looks the same.

Realize this. you are going to be out there for two months, with absolutely no money. You will not receive any money at all for two months time OR EVER. The captain of the crew your assigned to, will make sure you eat very well 3 - 5 times each and every day for those two months. Once your out there,, you are out there, that's it. YOU OR ANYONE ELSE, doesn't have the room to store 60 pairs of socks to change every day. and the same goes with ALL of the other "different" clothes you change EVERYDAY. ha ha ha..!! After a few weeks, you can take your socks off and "lean" them against anything !! (that was a joke).. no it wasn't.. no it really is !! (chuckle). And just where are you going to go @ 30 or 40 below zero .. .. to change ? (chuckle) LMAO !!!

YOUR on a different planet for two months time, cut off from everything. no newspapers or radio.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/IssacNsally.jpg

Sally's nickname is "Zak" This is one incrediblly smart woman.(she can't read) a very hard working woman with a very large family.
Issac is one of the few and proud people that have a full time permanent job n the village. He drives a huge front end loader, to scrape the streets of the village, keep the airport road open. so that snowmachines, hondas and vehicles can travel back & forth.
Issac is Umailiq of course, Any Inupiaq can / may become a whaling captain, if you can afford it. Opportuinty is knocking and my son Mark is going to take advantage of it. In a different way.

Mark's crew will of course consist of his other 3 brothers, We have one "cook" who hates to cook! but our plans for next year's whale hunt is to "acquire" a crew through people like you ! (yeah !) We will set up camp out on the ice for special people that wish to "live" out there, and have the experience of a lifetime.
You will only be allowed to shoot animals with film not with a rifle. although you are allowed to shoot ducks w/ permit.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/shoot.jpg

IT IS AGAINST THE LAW: for anyone other than an Inupiaq to be in that umiaq when it is in the water. during whaling only. But to have a crew and to have visitors out there, is perfectly acceptable.

There is Issac again, shooting a duck. boom! .. .. and if I said. the duck fell you would never believe me, and rightly so. because that just can't happen. but it has, many times.

I have heard countless times about the rifle that was too rusty. I have heard numerous stories abuot Sharmin who would go hunting with no rifle. and get ducks to drop out of the sky, but pointing a no rifle and saying boom. is like playing an air guitar and hearing the actual music.

the person to the right of Issac, is his (lucky to be alive son) Lazarus.

Story time: !! Once upon a time; Jonah (zak's son) had a girlfriend (Crystal), that was Jonah's girl-friend, they had a child together. Crystal left, Jonah and walked out on him and got a new boy-friend, that was just too much for Jonah to handle.. boom. he committed suicide.

then lazarus decided he didn't want to live either, two days after his brother checked out, Lazarus got the bright idea he would do the same thing. He put the gun under his chin and blew half of his face off and lived !!!
I really didn't ever think that someone could be that stupid, and live.

If you look closely, at the images, of hunters out on the ice, they are usually dressed in earth type; enviorment type, colors only. white for the ice & clouds; blue for the sky & water and brown for the earth.

Hondas and snowmachines and such are not allowed, down at the lead opening, because of the "foreign noise" factor. These are wild animals, easily "spooked" to swim & hide, and avoid the area, animals have many methods they use to communicate with one another, either with "actions" or sounds or "smell".

I was almost killed, on purpose, because of "another" person, who just would not listen and obey the "rules". He was plainly told, he didn't care, he was going to do his own thing, his way,, with habits he learned and mastered in his world, they don't work up here. Two rifles were pointed at me from two of the hunters, because this person just drove a honda out to the lead, left it running (making noise) and screamed out.. Hey Dave !!

The two hunters were Jake Koonuk & His brother Rupert My captains ! Oh no .. Leave now or die they said. I turned around and quckly moved as fast as I could and with out looking back, halfway expecting to get shot in the back.

I ran up to the honda jomped on and told that person , get on and get outta here befoer we both die.. scram !!!.. we did..as I held my breath. when we were a considrable distance away headed back to the village. I stopped, jumped off and screamed at this person.. What did you just do ? Why ? you were told by elders, you cannot just go down there you must be part of a crew !
I was there, when he was told by an elder, and two other people, whew..
This was a person, a construction worker who had met me in town, before whaling had started, The next time he saw me was when I had to pick up some things for the whaling captin I was in town and I had my white hunting parky on. with camera on my chest. Well when I explained what was going on and such, he said wow I sure want to go down ther and see them hunt.

I had never met or known this person, . he is from a place, 5,000 miles away on the east coast - "southie" south boston !!?? ?? ??
huh ? that is where I was born, on emerson street.

Two days later, I was called back down to the ice by Jake & Ruppert, I apologized to Jake & Ruppert, I told them of the elder, they smiled and said yes. we heard. Word reached town on what this worker had done. and he was fired.
figuratively ! he was banned from the village (blue ticket). Literally.

My good close friend Jacob Lane Jr. although the Jr. has been dropped because he has a son Jacob Jr.

Jacob & barbara, were very close friends of mine - elders. sob, they are gone.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/jacob.jpg

Jacob is quite the hunter, but he can't get around like he used to, because in 2003, taking a "ride" on the blanket, he tore up his leg, awful. He limps and it took a long long time to heal his leg.

We are located right on the south beach of Point Hope. here in this image. Hunting seals, and Jacob needs new skins for his umiaq. that requires ugruk skins, six of them to cover an umiaq. and a lot of food left over to store in the freezer.

Selling freezers to eskimo's used to be a big joke when I was a child. but in every house. there are at least two huge freezers. or more.

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/sisters.jpg

Continuing on with some "special news".

Formal Eskimo Dance @ Kivgiq held in Barrow (2007).

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/charlie.jpg

KIVGAQ is not held every year, but when it is held and announced. Natives from all over the entire state, merge on Barrow for a week long celebration of formal dance and singing. Heres Jacob & Della again. These people are just so happy all of the time and I seldom ever hear of people complaining ever.
Charlie Kinneavak dancing away. This 70 year old, does a dance one a year, only on the last day of Christmas festival and this dance is not allowed to be photographed. The dance is done using pullies for a life size Eskimo doll.!
It is a special dance that only Charlie can do. He made the puppet and he puts on quite a show with this every year.
http://majikimaje.com/WIND/JacobNdella.jpg

I will post a few of some of the Point Hope dancers and one "special dancer" showed up and the crowd went wild. In fact you have heard of this very famous person. He is famous all over the world.
He is often in the news. and news was made this year at Kivgaq, when he showed up to dance. Although he didn't bring his guitar, and he is older than when you last remembered seeing him in public, he has also put on just a little bit of weight.. He used to play in vegas quite a bit, before he died. But rumors still exist, that he is alive. He is, he has been hiding in the Arctic all of these years..

Elivs still lives !!! HIGH IN THE ARCTIC.. .. Elvis glows

And the crowd loved him !!! just look at the suprised faces in the crowd!
ha ha ha. gotcha !

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/Elvis.jpg

Sorry, but I just couldn't resist that "story" !!!
I had to find a way to place it in here to match
the photograph !!! !!

http://majikimaje.com/WIND/Elvis2.jpg

tHIS THREAD: is growing in a most unique way. Stories of events that have happened to me are I admit extremly bizarre, but I assure you, these are too easy to verify.

Bizzare is the "norm' here in the Arctic. anything can h ahppen and usually does in strange more bizarre ways that you can't even make up or imagine. these are true events.

Amos Lane died in 1989, his dogs woke the entire village up. you remember that part, if you have been reading this thread. That fall, frank Lane was given a new snowmachine from his mother Suyuq - Little Momma.

One cold day in december of 89, Frand drove to Kotzebue 200 miles south of Point hope. He took his brand new sno-go's - snowmobile - snowmachine. etc.

all was well, until he began his return back to Pt. Hope. just south of Kivalina, Frank went through the ocean ice with his machine, He was able to jump off before it went completly under.. He was dry. some hunters from that village that were near by, saw this happen, they rushed over to his aid to make sure

Using a niksit, they were able to grasp the machne and bring it up, on the ice and back to shore a shrot distance away. The hunters wanted to take Frank and his machine back to the village so he cound work on it. Frank said no !
that entire engine was stripped down and cleaned and dried. I just want to get home Frank said.

I remember it quite well, when he arrived back in the village, that year, there were cables hanging out all over the top of that machine. He did manage to get it working and get back. but that machine was quite the sight to see.
but it takes a lot of guts to sit out there, in that wind, and successfully perform all of that difficult work.

Well thanks a big thanks Tom & Lynn, I sure appreciate your comments.

Well these images have been published many tmes in many different books, magazines, newspapers and other media. and some have even won awards.

Year after year, these images continue to sell, all over the state of Alaska and in many of the lower 48 states and too many different countries for me to count.

No ! I don' t suppose you would make a big thing out of chipping ice out of the driveway when you see these people have to do it .. daily, for many miles. and no pay. The only reward for all of this incredibly hard work is that you get to eat !

That doesn't seem like much of a reward for such a great length of time and for so much hard work, but that is all these people want. To be able to hunt and eat the food of their ancestors and live the culture & lifestyle of their tradition, which has been going on for many many thousands of years, right here in this one spot of land.!!

Thanks again for all of the wonderful comments !!
I have done my job well to deserve such rich praise and continued interest !!

This story opens my eyes to an unimagined culture. Very interesting and enlightening. I can't say that Mikiaq looks or sounds very appetizing though! It's sad to see cultures like this change because of government regulations and climate change.

By the way...are there any pictures of you in this story?

Well if I showed you what I really look like, you would freak.

BIG TIME; > I have another story for you that is just as bizzarre as all the rest.

Have you ever seen a man, that appears to be pregnant and about to give birth to twins at any moment ? THAT'S ME !!

NO!.. ..I am not big or fat. I look pregnant due to a botched surgery three times all because I had the flu !!

I made the mistake of going to a hospital in Anchorage in 1998.
