If you are referring to me I make no apologies at all for saying the work is average, a lot of it here is. Some of it is also absolutely excellent.

This is Fred Miranda, where pros and experienced photographers hang out and we want to see the good stuff, not a picture showing how one beer bottle is in focus and the others aren't. That isn't art it's cr@p. It doesn't help choose a lens at all.

I'm not showing my pics here for two very good reasons, first I don't own an 85L, so can't contribute a pic here and secondly my work is almost all copyrighted by my clients not to be shown as it is (now) largely industrial and sensitive. I'm happy to respond to individual requests for links to my site, although it's fairly standard pro fare.

I do post the occasional personal pic, but they often aren't brilliant and I want to keep the standards here up as much as possible.

You all should too.

I may regret this, but hey...I'll bite

So you're saying the photographer not the lens creates the bokeh quality? Any lens can have good or bad bokeh?

Off you go then - grab an f8 mirror lens and I'd love to see how you can get similar shots to what is shown here or in the 1.8 thread.

More seriously I'd love to see a single 85L shot that exhibits the 'nisin' (hard edged ring) bokeh I have seen from many 1.8 examples

A few posts ago I was wondering about your motivations... Because one could easily have gotten the impression that you were driven by arrogance, rudeness and envy. So, it is a relief to know that it is NOT about that at all I understand your motivation is to "keep the standards here up as much as possibe". A noble cause indeed.

Having said that, I don't think that looking down at the work of other posters and being rude about it is going to be of much help... As an experienced photographer (which you claim to be) with obviously noble intentions, you could have set a better example IMHO. Needless to say, I am disappointed in your contribution to this thread.

Don't loose sight of the intention of this (or any particular) thread. This particular thread is about the power, or capabilities if you will, of the EF 85/1.2L. Standards have little to do with it. Even shots of beer bottles or test charts will contribute something useful to this topic. The topicstarter asked for images:

I just purchased this lens & would love to see some images made by those that have it. I would think technique would be important with this hunk of glass.

That doesn't read as "Your best shots only please" to me.

While your intention to keep the standards (whose standards are those anyway?) high is fine, you shouldn't indiscriminately apply it to every possible thread and every possible post.

Agreed - shots that show misfocus are just as helpful in deciding if this lens is for you. Much as I love it, it's not without it's difficulty in use - though that can be part of the fun/challenge.

Wow, very mature response...

So, it is all about YOU after all... Disregard your posts? Well don't mind if I do David... A bigmouth that doesn't care about the feelings of others, with no pictures to back things up isn't very credible anyway... I agree, not worth any of my time.

"85L 1.2..show your shots"

Recall from page 1 that I am the first perosn to post a direct pic on the thread. In fact, this is the first pic I have ever posted on FM. To me, the title screams post a shot no matter how bad or good it is. Its time to show the class what you have done!!

Oh, this from the "expert" with NO sense of humor. My pic was posted following a shot
of a wine bottle and submitted for fun. Actually if you took the time to look there is a
beautiful landscape reflected in the top half of the center bottle. it also coveys the thin
DOF wide open. I never said it was art but for you to call it crap....well, I feel sorry for you.
What a miserable little person you must be.

Very funny about the mirror lens. For anyone here who doesn't already know, mirror lenses render OOF highlights as "donuts." It is ugly, but sometimes it works.

From another forum:
http://homepage3.nifty.com/3rdpartylens-om/sakurei/ohnar300-3.jpg

Regarding "nisen" bokeh; it does not mean "hard edged ring" it means "double (or two)" which means there is a slight doubling of highlights and they are usually overlaid closely. There is soft nisen bokeh and hard nisen bokeh, and everything in between. The 1.8 does exhibit this sometimes, but it is very easy to avoid if you know your lens.

The shot that I criticized above (from the 85L) shows hard edged bokeh. The edges of the OOF highlights are obviously brighter. So there's your sample.

Every time, every time there is an 85L thread you wheel out that awful picture as though it was something to be proud of.

Perhaps it is your best work, in which case I sincerely apologise

There is no need, no justification for exchange of such personal, inconsiderate and hurtful comments......amongst literate adults to boot.

Even when picture critique is sought by the photographer, it should be rendered in a tactful and constructive way.

I find it very sad that on this site (or any other) that people feel the need to sabotage a thread with such childish comments.

This thread originated with the purpose of "showing off" the capabilities of the 85 1.2. It didn't imply that the lens was better than a lens in anyone elses collection. It didn't imply that someone was a better photographer than anyone else who didn't use it. It didn't imply that if you didn't own it you weren't worthy of being called a photographer - and it certainly wasn't initiated to insight a host of unnecessary negative comments.

I understand that some people might not think the lens is necessary in order to get a great photograph - nobody said it was necessary. This was a thread started as " 85 f1.2L...show your shots " and that's exactly what it should be. A collection of individuals showing off what this lens can do. If you feel it so necessary to degrade the lens or the individuals using it - start you own thread & title it "Why I don't think the 85 1.2 is worth it". Otherwise, let those who like & enjoy this lens - and what it can produce - have their time.

I don't own the lens. However, I can certainly appreciate it's capabilities. I check out threads like this to see what others can produce with it & how well a lens can perform. I don't need wasteful, ignorant comments in order to do that. Like I said - start another thread if you must. If you don't feel compelled to start another thread - keep your mouth shut and move on!

Now - let those of us that want to see the true purpose of this thread have just that!

Post those pictures!

Wayne,

I am relatively new here too, but fortunately it seems rudeness is the exception, rather than the rule. Like you I believe it serves no useful purpose to hurt someone’s feelings by unkind comments about their posts. There have been some excellent photos posted here, many of which are clearly of sentimental value to the posters. I assume comments like those you are referring to are designed to boost the ego of the poster. They quite likely discourage others from posting, which is a shame. Usually when a poster is negative like this, you either cannot find any of his photos posted, or if you do, they merit the very criticism he is so anxious to shower upon others.

It's almost as if this lens is possessed, in a good way. I recently acquired mine and am still learning how to use it. No, the auto focus is not so fast but it sure produces dreamy images. That's freshly fallen snow in the background of my picture of my dog, Rhett.

I love the way his face emerges from this ethereal background. This smooth, creamy isolation is really what is magic about this lens, and makes toting the extra size and weight around worthwhile.

I think that Dhphoto's initial opinion was not rude at all, but how HE saw the photos in this thread. I think he was trying to point out to the OP that many of the images posted were not showing the true capablilites of the 85L and that the lens is capable of producing better images. All he did was post his honest opinion. If you read through the thread, it was only when dh was provoked that he retaliated. I think its a bit unfair to pile on at this point.

Perhaps we should all move on.
