Steven, I understand your point, however I will point out two things:
a. This is the Canon-mount SLR forum, not the 'business of photography', 'economics of photography' or politics forum.
b. If the moderators allowed this political discourse to continue (clearly an item that is touchy for a lot of people) it will only encourage other such future discussions on this board, one that has been designated as a place for the discussion of Canon gear.
Yes, some of the other really stupid threads on this board don't bring any value however that cannot be used as excuse to allow an off-topic discussion (no matter how generally important).

Worse... you still owe! and several grand worth!
No new toys for me! At least not until around May!
possible excepts include things I might buy used from a friend, including but not limited to a 14-24 Nikkor.
Didn't read the rest of this thread... But I would really like to buy a Gitzo 2530. Of course, I could always use a shot in the old savings account to. Hmm...
In the UK I pay 40% tax on part of my earnings. I pay 17.5% VAT (sales tax) on nearly everything I buy. Thats just to national government - the local government robs me again - £1200/year property tax. As someone who works I get zero services in return - even my bin (trash) only gets emptied every second week these days.
Our unelected prime minister is planning NO tax cuts & NO interest rate cuts. Our petrol (gasoline) tax is 400% and about to go UP. (Petrol £1.05/Litre)
What will I get with my windfall? I'm working extra hours and saving up for a (small) memory card.

We know all about that. The Boston Tea Party comes to mind. About all I'm going to get out of this big rebate is watching somebody else buy things with my money. Lucky me. I hope they get something I want.
As for the government giving me things, I pay taxes, therefor the government hasn't given me anything that I haven't paid for.
I received a letter from the Social Security Administration telling me that I have enough credits in to get retirement, however there won't be a social security for me, when I'm old enough to get it...I'm 25...
As for my taxes being a burdern, I would certainly say they are. 40% of my check is gone to taxes, insurance, union dues, and retirement before I even get it.
All of that said, I didn't think this was a political debate. The money that I get (if I get it) will go towards a new lens. I really want to save all I can to get a 70-200 L series lens.
Let me get this straight... I'll file my tax return April 14th, send Uncle Sam a check for many grand because I never pay enough tax on my freelance earnings, then he'll send me $600 a month later.
And the government really thinks I'm just gonna go out and spend it with that big hole in my account?
Frankly this country is royally screwed. With an economy amped up on consumer spending fueled by wild stock and housing market speculation there's gonna potentially be a nasty shock as those markets go flat for a few years. And it'll take a few years for this hangover to pass through the system IMO.
Interesting to see some political perspective on this topic. I for one have never understood why so many have this "screw you" mentality to those with wealth, when they would most certainly trade places in an instant if given the chance.

vote ron paul . save the world.
my bad...i voted for GWB...twice. thought the iraq war wasnt that bad of an idea...yada yada.
i was wrong.
ive taken the red pill aka Ron Paul.
if i hadnt id probably be a lot less concerned about the economy and a lot more excited about the "stimulus package" and the checks or rebates or borrowed chinese money or money printed out of thin air...whatever it is they want to call it.
id say that our profession is pretty sensitive to the economy and to bring everything back around full circle to the original topic, the govt. sure isnt leading by example on how to be responsible with money. the govt and the fed are being irresponsible by creating an enviroment where people can be completely irresponsible and creating these bubbles that are going to burst.
unfortunately, i think another poster was right when they said that itd probably take it a while to get out of the system.
im sorry if im coming off as a negative nancy, but ive recently gone from mildly apathetic to very passionate in this whole thing.
if it helps matters any, ive been drooling over an 85L forever, but havent been able to quite justify pulling the trigger. if i got a check and stopped giving money to Ron Paul, id be getting close to snagging one. i think ill still keep donating, though

It's simply asinine, thinking that half the people won't pay off debt with the money. I just can't believe it's come to this!
Actually Jeff we are borrowing a lot of it from China .
