Question, when the modified lens is zoomed to 10mm does the rear element protrude past the rear cover.
If it does, are there any of the covers with an opening that would stop the lens from zooming that far.On my 10-22 s the zoom seems to stop when the rear element hits the cover.
Since the cover does not seen to move during zoom it should by safe to use as long as the rear element does not protrude into the body.

Yes, it does. I'm not aware of any cover which would prevent it.
BTW, I'd not want that kind of cover on the lens, as I still use it on my 400D while travelling.
Would this modification work to allow 10D users to use all of the EF-S lenses? I would love to use the 10-22 and 17-55, but I am stuck with a 10D for the time being. Anyone know the price of the part from Canon?
The full size image in your link shows the edges to be very soft with pretty severe CA, even at f8 setting.
I think it shows that just because a lens can be modified to work on a larger sized sensor camera than the lens was designed for doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea.
But maybe it would be useful trick for owners of older 1.6 camera bodies.

Looks good enough for me for 12mm lens.
Besides, what is the alternative to EF-S 10-22 mm zoom for 1D owners? Sigma 12-24 is much bigger and heavier and I'm not sure it would provide any better results.

The catch is - you don't want to use the lens below 12mm on 1.3x and below 15mm on FF, as you get black corners on the pics and the mirror will hit the rear element.
I'll post sky image soon.;
hi Al,
i had this idea for quite some time already after a friend of mine showed me that he removed the rear cover of his ef-s10-22, but i didnt have the guts to do it and could not risk the possibility of dust coming in the lens without the cover. now that i've seen what you did, i will definitely call canon for the back cover
here is my input to make sure you wont damage your rear element...
zoom it towards the 11 or 12mm and make sure that the top part of the rear element (convex top part of the glass) is leveled to the new rear cover that you replaced. Check the distance from the surface of the plastic part of the front element (where the canon ef-s markings are) to the filter threads. using that distance, find something to use as a spacer (that distance = thickness of spacer) and stick it on the plaster part of the element and then install a filter in front. this should now prevent the lens from zooming further than 12mm as it is now blocked by that spacer in front (fyi, the front element moves forward&back when zooming).
I was wondering if anyone had more information on this as I would love to be able to use the lens on a Mark II
1-Has anybody ordered the additional rear plastic cover from Canon? How much is the part from Canon and what is it called?
2-Do you really need to replace the rear cover after it is pulled off? OR Can you use the lens on a 1.3 crop camera by just pulling off the cover?
3-Has anybody tried the trick of putting a spacer between the lens and a filter?
