Hooked these together with a Quantum high voltage cable (CM5+) and as I turn the TR-2000 on (to HV) the flash got to a blank display with an exclamation flashing. What does that mean?
No damage was done. The Metz continues to function with AA batteries and the battery pack continues to function with a Sunpak 120J flash.
Anything I've done wrong? Or are these 2 pieces incompatible with each other.
Ok, so I rented a Quantum Turbo 2x2 and tried it out. The power switch of the flash itself is supposed to be turned off while the battery pack is in use. The battery pack supplies both high voltage for the flash capacitor and low voltage for the computer to the flash.
Although the Sunpak battery pack has a 7 pin DIN connector similar to the one used by Quantum Turbo, the pin assignments are not exactly the same. Refer to this article for DIN plug numbering:
Quantum Turbo pin assignment:
pin 1: low voltage (around 8V)
pin 2: charger (24V DC)
pin 3: blocked
pin 5: high voltage
pin 6 & pin 7: ground
shield: ground
Sunpak TR 2000 pin assignment:
pin 3: low voltage (6.19V)
pin 5 high voltage
pin 6 & pin 7: ground
shield and all other pins: not connected
Using Sunpak TR-2000 to power Metz 54 MZ-3
I am not sure if the low voltage from pin 3 supplies enough current to drive all the computerized functions of the flash including autozoom. Sunpak may have deliberately moved the pin - I am not sure.
The Metz connector has 3 pins. Counting from the top
pin 1: low voltage input (will charge through flash's own step up circuitry)
pin 2: ground
pin 3 (seperate): high voltage
Metz will give an error on the display if the power pack and the flash unit are both turned 'on'. You are supposed to use only one at a time. Also, you cannot supply low voltage by the flash's own AA batteries while high voltage is supplied externally. The flash will also give an error for that.
Using Quantum Turbo 2x2 with Sunpak-brand 2-pin cable
A Sunpak 2-pin cable bought from Quantum works with Quantum Turbo 2x2, but a Sunpak 2-pin cable bought from Sunpak does NOT. 2 changes need to be made to the Sunpak-brand cable:
1, Shield has to be connected to ground, i.e. pin 6 and 7. Use a thick wire.
2, pin 3 will have to be removed from the DIN connector.
