While waiting for the 'real' light to bathe the Dunes in Death Valley, I made a few exposures of pre-dawn. I found this time to be so soothing and fulfilling. I did make a series of images when the sun threw long shadows on the sand, but this moment had it's short glory.
Jeffrey, I love the soft pre-dawn light here, with just the bg left ridge getting the first kiss of alpenglow. Nicely done!
I wish we'd have had this kind of sky in Lone Pine!
The sky really does it for me. I might prefer a curves adjustment to bring out a little more light in the middle toned areas, but this is still very well done.
A nice teaser. That soft light shows a brownish tone near the horizon. Maybe a bit of wind? If so, the dunes will be fabulous. No big human tracks in the scene.
Very nice Jeffrey. Killer sky and simple scenes are definitely my thing. I'd prefer a tad more saturation on the sand part though.
If I may ask, how does the 24-70L perform on 1Ds3? I'm planning of getting the lens later this year, and it's being quite trashed lately (especially when compared with the latest nikon 24-70). I've done a bit of researching and found nikon to be no better than canon, so I think the "issue" is non-existant or largely over-blown (as everything when it comes to "measurebators") Also, I definitely WON'T own a full frame (let alone the high resolution one) in near or distant future. So I wonder how do you like the lens, from the practical point of view of course.

Thanks, Milan. I absolutely can't see how anyone could 'trash' this lens. It certainly is among the standard of lens choices of pros and amateurs alike. So far, the new Canon likes it, too.
I've received a few comments concerning the 'contrast' and color of parts of this image. I get these comments all the time. I will do nothing to change this image. Considerable time has been put into getting the colors and lighting just right. Sadly, most people just want pumped up contrast and colors all the time..

Thanks for quick answer Jeffrey, I just want to make the right purchase and this is another factor that makes me want to have that lens even more.
As for bumping the contrast and saturation - in my case, I think the clouds have a tad more saturation than sand. But viewing small and dark toned images on the web can be a bit decieving. Prints tend to show these darker tones and colors much better. This may be one of the reasons why several people commented the way they did. Anyway, like I said, I like it very much.
