May as well throw my hat in the ring for Monument Valley also!
My first real visit there (Other than zooming through on the highway) and the best thing was I was about the only one there. It pays to go on a weekday in January. The $5.00 fee was well worth it...
The D40x and Sigma 10-20mm seem to pair very well together for sharpness and color. Unfortunately I lost a little control of the CP as the D40x doesn't have the DOF button... Oh well, we do what we can.
Nice work here. Very cool with the snow on the ground, it gives a great contrast to the reds. I never use the DOF button to preview what the CP will look like, I can see what it is going to do through the viewfinder as I turn it. But on my 11-18mm Tamron, I rarely use anymore because the effect is so pronounced, or if I do use it, I turn it to where in the viewfinder it looks like the effect has disappeared.
Thanks guys! I'm trying to collect a bunch of Utah landscapes this year since the snowfall so far this year has been way over average.
Barry, The moon was just there. I just tried to compose the frame with it bouncing between the two mittens, I wasn't expecting it so I was really excited when I saw it rising right between them. Looks smaller than it was in real life. That must be a consequence of the 10mm.
Jim I keep reading the "rule" that you aren't even supposed to use a CP on a wide angle.. Do you think that's true?
Is this site (where you took the photo) easily accessible by car? Or does it require a FWD vehicle and a guide? Is it far from a place to stay (hotel, village, town)?
Steady Hand, It is easily accessable by car, no 4-wd required. The only road open without paying for guided tours is the 17 mile loop. It's a little rough and muddy right now but easily passable in any car. Also there are several hotels in the area. You could stay at Goulding's Lodge, or a bunch of other motels in surrounding towns such as Mexican Hat or Kayenta. There's a motel hanging right on the San Juan river in Mexican Hat I think would be cool, but I could be wrong! I've never stayed in any of them, I just drive around.
David when I moved over here from Colorado all I wore were shorts - until December when I realized that it actually does get cold here! Where I work it has been 7-10 degrees below zero every morning for the last week.
