There is some (free) software and I know people know about it here. I read the post in the last 60 days, but can't remember enough to get an accurate search result set. I thought I saved it, but I guess I was wrong...
Perhaps if you ask for 5d counts you'll get the answer (and apply it to your camera of course).
For the 1 series, the tool is supposed to be Cancount.
However, I get a Cancount shutter count of 1400 on my very low use 1DMkII, but Canon says the camera has 6000. They say that 3rd party software doesn't get it right.
Sorry guys, but besides cancount and 1Dcount which is all people have talked about for years, there is now software that is supposed to be able to read the 5d and lower cameras. If I didn't believe that to be the case I would have posted what you all posted, but the 1 series limitation may not be there anymore......
I'm making no absolute claims, I haven't used it, nor do I know how accurate it is, but people have talked about it. Until I test it myself (if I can find the link), I'm still going to say that the shutter count may, that's a MAY, be readable on the lower model cameras.

If you can produce a link to the software, it sure would be nice to put an end to these recurring threads regarding non 1-series bodies and shutter actuations. I'm really starting to feel like a broken record.

I checked a service ticket against 1Dcount. Dead on.
I was curious about shutter actuation count myself and went through this thread to find out for my 5D, but didn't conclude anyone had an answer. I looked for the software mentioned, but it must be only for PCs, not Macs, so I couldn't find any. When I checked my 5D, I found activating the Info window shows a number in the lower left area just off center (next to an icon that looks like a piece of paper or a vertically oriented rectangle) that appeared it might be a shutter actuation count. I tried firing a shot, and it incremented by 1. Checking the camera manual, it says this number is indeed an image count that goes up to 9999 if the count is set to Continuous. Otherwise, it's possible to set it to Auto Reset and have it start over with each CF card insertion. I guess you have to keep your own record of how many times you hit 10,000.

If you didn't buy the camera new, then it is possible that it was serviced and the counter was reset?
You can download a Fully Operational Demo of Photo Mechanic from www.camerabits.com .... There you can use PM as a method of checking Actuations, and is as accurate or more than 1D Count or Cancount. PM works on both PC & Mac. I have it on both platforms. To see the actuations, you need to add to the Exif Data, but I can explain that to anyone that is interested. Otherwise CS3, can see your shutter counts, but only on the 1 Series. Any other bodies, gotta go to Canon.
