p.3 #1 · B&H and UPS - A marrieage headed for hell!

In the same holiday week, I ordered a Canon lens from B&H Wed. morning Jan. 2 and received the item in Boston via 3-day (normal ground UPS price) the next morning -- at 10:30 AM.

Like most good shippers, B&H tells you via e-mail that your order has been processed. You do want to know that ASAP, right? They give you the tracking number in that e-mail, but UPS doesn't scan in the tracking number until it picks up the package. So if you take the shipper's e-mail and immediately try to track the package, there won't be a record on the UPS web site. That' s actually a legal requirement -- it's required by the laws of physics, which require UPS to wait until the package is ready before they can pick it up. Once they pick it up, they can scan the tracking number into their system.

UPS updates its sytem late in the evening to estimate delivery date. UPS is amazingly reliable, but once in a while, over say, New Year's Day they're going to have a delay. It's not reasonable to expect them to be perfect, and it's not reasonable to think it's B&H's fault.

I'm in St. Louis. I purchase from B&H get free ground shipping via NAPP and without exception I receive the package in two days from day of order unless the item is out of stock or I have a new UPS driver who is all fouled up.

In my case...I am talking about UPS scans times..not from time of email from B&H.
again...Shipping from B&H was great.

UPS got it, scanned and set delivery for January 4... 2 day delivery.
"origin" scan (NJ) at 1:41a.m. on 1-3-08
"exception" scan at 4:30a.m. on 1-3-08 (because they missed the package)
"departure" scan at 9:05a.m on 1-4-08

that is not a typo... origin scan at 1:41a on 1-3-08... departure scan at 9:05a 1-4-08
the package sat in NJ over a day... they knew they missed it, they noted it, yet no action from UPS for 29 hours.

"arrival" scan (KY) at 11:27a 1-4-08
"departure" scan at 3:56a 1-5-08
no scans since it left Louisville, it is now 12:07a est

UPS has removed any mention of estimated delivery... that is probably not a good sign.

I don't understand this. The lens was shipped well within the stated parameters. Just because the buyer "normally" gets an order in two days doesn't change the fact that the shipment is within spec. If anything his beef is with UPS. Even then I don't think there is a problem.

It's called taking care of your customers and making sure they are satisfied, even if the problem isn't your fault. Nobody wants a customer with a bad taste in their mouth, let alone someone who posts on forums for hundreds of other people to read about their negative experience.

In my mind, crediting a few bucks for shipping is well worth the cost of doing nothing, even if they would be justified in doing so.

It's a nice gesture by B&H if you ask me!

UPS has screwed up more than 10 overnight or two day shipments for me in the last year . I now insist on fedex as they have never screwed me .

As a small businessman, I expect the same level of service that I afford my Clients. If I place an order early in the day, I expect it to ship that day or the next. I don't want to pay for rush delivery just to get it out the door sooner.

I am convinced that UPS has twelve year olds making their deliveries and refuse to deal with them. My new studio is less than a mile from the FedEx station, not the 24 mile round trip to UPS. Even though UPS is based in Atlanta I refuse to support the local team... maybe they should be driving short yellow buses
