What is the best book on color theory you have read? (akin to "light, science and magic" for understanding light.)

You might want to check old collage physics books that seems to be where I have found the most info regarding the properties of light. In the past I also found interesting articles by searching online, then printing them out to read...I also learned alot from painting books, one such book is Color Right From the Start by Hillary Page.

I would say the best I have read is "Professional Photoshop - The Classic Guide to Color Correction" by Dan Margulis. Obviously its more oriented toward color correction in Photoshop, but it really does delve into the details to quite a substantial degree.

A couple other excellent color reference books:
- "Color Management - Industrial-Strength Production Techniques" by Bruce Fraser et. al. is pretty heavy on the theory, and from that perspective is a little more like Light, Science...
- "Color Correction for Digital Photographers Only" is pretty good, but not as good as Color Managenment... - in my opinion.

If you do people photography the classic and truly a great book is "Skin - The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies" by Lee Varis.

What would you recommend for someone with little color experience? I need to beef up my color knowledge because I also do digital layout.

Thanks
Thomas

A good starter book (easy to read) and as much practical as theory is "The Complete Guide to Digital Color Correction" by Michael Walker.
