Aaron at Canon UK just called to book in my 1D3 for fix. When I told him I had sold it he asked what I had replaced it with. We had talked about Nikon during the last call. He is aware that people are moving. He asked why I had replaced it with 1Ds3 and when I said it was due to my collection of glass he said that was a common reason for sticking with Canon. They are sending me a 2GB flash card as a sweetener. They seem to be taking the threat seriously, by calling each photographer and trying to find out what she thinks, and offering what it takes, within reason to keep them sweet.
Maybe Canon Japan can be persuaded to fix the lack of joystick AF point selection in firmware if enough of us complain about it. Maybe they will go so far as to hire interface designers instead of letting engineers do it next time.

how many people bagged for a fw that makes the Direct Print button reconfigurable on the 5D? ... not a chance ....
I recently got a very detailed web 'interview' in regard to my support experience. It was somewhat interactive, in that it actually came back and asked me to explain the rather low ratings I had given. There were some very specific questions about whether or not I'd suggest Canon to others, whether I'd consider changing to a different brand, etc. Interesting.
As to the Direct Print button, some market segments actually use it, but why they don't make it user-configurable is a mystery to all.

Jeff, Many companies do this thing today. Its known as Net Promoter Score Or simply put what % age of your customer base is likely to recommend the brand to a friend. Its tracked on a continuous basis and any dip in this % age is investigated thoroughly.

I felt that it was very clearly a result of the MkIII service debacle, based upon the rather specific questions asked. I wish there had been a way to save it...

The print button remains a mystery and a consternation. I would be happy to be able to custom configure the print button into a MLU etc., they could even still call it a print button, so what!

Canon 1D ergonomics was clearly lacklustre. Today in light of MkIII user interface improvements one can perhaps say that with impunity. A few years ago one got incenerated crisp for a suggestion of sorts by all the "pros" who could operate their 1D's blindfolded and one-fingered (non extended).
However, I think Canon would do better by letting engineers take charge of their overall camera design as opposed to letting computer programmers run amok with their Digics.

I'd guess you're right, Jeff. I know my company does internal market research out the wazoo. It's the only way you're going to figure out where you're messing up. It's good news that they're putting together the numbers although I wouldn't really want to be Canon's internal market research guy that has to brief the results throughout the company. Not going to be a pleasant task to formally tell all the various departments how badly they messed up (although I'm sure they already know it.)

These cards retail for $30 US these days. They'll need to do a lot more than that to retain customers... like releasing a good camera.

I agree...all the DSLR direct print buttons should be configurable (not just the 5D)....heck my G9's direct print button is configurable, so why can't my 30D's be?
