whats a better lens choice with the 40D body? for all around i heard many good things about tarmon then 28-135

The Tammy has far better image quality, but you'll have to choose the focal length range that's best for you.

I would say 17-50 for studio, something in the 85 to 200mm range for outdoors.

The Canon 28-135 IS is a great all around lens. It was my favorite until I bought the 24-70 2.8 L lens last month.

Just another point for consideration, the Tamron lens is manufactured for APS-C sensors only, so if you decided to go with a full frame body, this lens will not be compatible.
