I am planning to purchase a Nikon Coolscan 5000 film scanner, which comes with Nikon scanning software. B&H offers LaserSoft Imaging's "SilverFast Ai Scan / Image Optimization Software".
What does SilverFast do that the software that comes with the scanner not do? Can anyone give me some advice on why I should spend the extra $335 for this software?
I haven't tried the SilverFast product, but the software that comes with the 5000 is very good. Also, it looks like SilverFast offers a free, full featured, demo download to let you try before you buy -
"Furthermore we offer the possibility to test SilverFast here as a demo version for free. The demo versions are neither limited in functionality - except for the IT8 calibration - nor in time, however, the final scans include a watermark with our company name inside."
So it looks like you can get familiar with the tools Nikon provides (which may take some time) then try SilverFast for free and decide if it is worth it.
