Hello all,
I'd like to say to everyone, very well done the last two weeks. I'm sorry I was unable to comment on some excellent work by all of you, but I was unable to get to an internet connection while in Costa Rica.
It is just a wonderful execution. I see another Nikon man? Your work is great and another person I would like to chat with about how you get the results... love this shot.

Glade you are back. Love the shots from your trip. I like the drama, lighting and crispness of this one. Is it over the top, well a little but that is what we like. If you are going to say it why not shout it. This is a great entry for this WA. Very well executed, the shot as well as the keyboard. Good Luck.

Not over dramatic but honest. I doubt anyone here has not had a time they wanted to do that. Love the lighting and colour.
Best of luck
Mark
Thanks Mark, good to hear I'm not the only crazy one.

Hey thank you Steve! Yep I'm a Nikon user, for digital at least.
For this shot I had two light sources, a 60W desk lamp at table height on the right, (with the bottom of it's light fall-off just above the TV tray holding the keyboard) and a flashlight just left of the camera to illuminate the keyboard. I then knelt down next to the TV tray, quickly tripped the 2sec timer with a remote and held as still as possible.
Then I opened in photoshop, and extracted myself and the keyboard and table, replacing the background with pure black. (For extracting I used the polygonal lasso tool to select, then made a layer mask with the resulting selection. Then added a new black layer underneath) Zooming in to a high percentile I went over the entire thing with a soft-edged brush altering the layer mask where necessary. Then I converted to black and white and added a strong sepia tone with curves. I made a few minor contrast adjustments, resized, sharpened and called it done.

Much obliged Karen, it's good to be back. (Although the weather here is awful in comparison ) Very pleased you like this, it was fun to shoot.

Thanks Julien, I guess I should be more gentle with my things if I want them to work....
Jason, It is always great to view your work. I knew this one was yours from the thumbnails. I really appreciate you explaining your techniques as it helps those of us who wonder "How was that done?" This image is perfect for the WA and very well executed. Something we can all relate to!
