p.1 #1 · Monopods

I know there have been and are always a lot of monopod topics, but I couldn't find anything helpful by searching and the other current topic seems to be mostly filled with arguments about where it should have been posted in the first place.

That said, what do you think is the absolute best monopod setup for a 300/2.8 IS (on a 5D, often with the 1.4x TC)? I'm not too worried about price, so I imagine Gitzo is the way to go, but is there any one in particular? And what kind of head, clamp, etc.? I did a bunch of research on tripods a while back--is the head/clamp/plate situation the same for monopods? And, in general, which do you prefer and why? I'll probably only be able to get one setup or the other, and I'd like to choose right--I shoot landscapes and wildlife mostly.

Thanks for all your help,
Ben

I use a Manfrotto/Bogen 681. It's a great, no frills monopod that is very reasonably priced. You should be able to pick one up for about $75 just about anywhere.

No clamp of head of any kind for me. I just screw the lens tripod foot right to the monopod.

Depending on how tall you are.

I may be swimming against the flow here, but I like to put a ball head on top of my mono, I feel it gives me more flexability, I have the Manfrotto 679B with a Manfrotto 488 RC0 head.

I have a 488RCO attached to a 682B. I removed the RC0 head and replaced it with a RRS thumb clamp. Much nicer.

I use a G1588 monopod with a BH-40 ballhead with my 5D and 300 2.8 L IS with or without a 1.4x teleconverter.

I put a Bogen 3265 on my Sherlock walking "stick" at times. Sucks for balance but gives it enough height for use with the camera. It's also very handy when I anchor the stick to some kind of available support to get suitable positioning. However, most of the time, a head wouldn't otherwise be necessary for much of what I do.
