In all seriousness, I haven't had the real opportunity to thoroughly test my lenses at various FL since the mess up. I feel like I have adjusted them enough to make it usable. However, I still do not see results like those Eagle pics that is for sure. Not even close. Prior to the submirror fix, I'd say I got very good results with all my lenses and NO micro adjustment.

I am just confused as to what to do next. Sending it back again gives me no faith since there

Seriously if they do ever fix this camera, they should gives guys like you a new 100% guaranteed version and take your back and crush it. I'd have gone postal by now.

I just keep kicking myself in the arse for sending it in... It worked fine before. I got "greedy" and wanted to extend my warranty and have the recall completed for the most current components. The dang thing worked excellent from July - Jan....

And to think some have been dealing with it the entire time... I can only imagine.

Damn, mine is in repair now... Although I had trouble AIS ànd One Shot, I really don't hope it gets back worse. When focussed correctly it made awesome pics.

Hmm, planning some Molotov strategies here...

Kinda weird i sent my MK III that worked fine in for the FIX in mid December and it came back the same as it went in. Just yesterday I got another emailed evaluation form and shipping label along with a voice message saying that they are ready for me to send in my camera.

I just spoke to the Canon rep handling my camera. Apparently it is fixed and just needs to be tested to make sure the fix holds this time. Here is the way things seem to be sorting out.

1. The problem with my camera is/was that the distance from the rear flange to the sensor is wrong. I was not crazy or being picky, it was not physically possible for the camera to focus properly. Hopefully, this will shut-up some of the less sensitive folks around here - the problems are real and the problems are bad. (There, that was nicer than an FU wasn't it?)

2. The fix is to insert shims and reposition the lens mount. I have been assured by the nice fellow at Canon (and I am not being snide, he is quite nice) that this is standard practice and is part of the build process as well. I don't know enough about camera manufacturing but this wasn't what I expected to hear as the implication is that each camera has to be tested for individual variations and shimed accordingly - after it is mostly built.

3. He didn't have an answer (and I didn't really expect him to offer one) as to why my camera took two journeys to Canon Factory Service and the problem wasn't detected. Given the obvious nature of my problem when properly tested on their equipment the service history of this camera is not cool and suggests that they are grossly incompetent or don't have a clue as to what they are dealing with or how to handle the problems. Neither is an acceptable answer at this stage of the game.

4. The first attempt at fixing the distance problem failed and had to be repeated. It is the second fix that they are testing today before sending it out. To their credit, they caught the error or continuing problem before it left and were up front with me about it. Major points should be given there but it didn't do anything to reassure me that shiming all of the cameras was the greatest idea in the world.

From my perspective, I am really hoping that the fix works and I finally have a camera that focuses properly. If it does, then I will have a great tool but only because it took an extraordinary effort and lots of individual adjustment to get it up to the standards that they established for its performance. However, unless someone can convince me that all cameras need to adjusted like this and that I am just being naive in thinking otherwise, I'll never recommend that anyone buy a 1DMkIII as it appears to be an absolute crap shoot as to whether you get one that will focus or not.

Well I hope this is the final chapter for you and may be the main cause of so many different results from different cameras. It will be nice to hear your report once the camera is in your hands. Just curious did you have problems in 1 shot as well as AI servo.

I just got mine back for the 3rd time. Came today. Doorbell rang and I got there just in time to see the FedEX lady tossing my camera about 4 feet in the air and landing on my front porch as the box rolled around and hit the door and the stone wall. Already called FexEX and reported it. Just got off the phone with the technition who fixed my camera. Several of my AF Sensors had to be recalibrated and then fine tuned. They were beyond the level of tolerance (whatever that means). I asked him very bluntly about the report of a new fix as reported by Rob Galbraith, he said that everyone there has heard the rumors, but assured me that there is no new fix coming. I asked him about the post right before this one about the Flange and the shims that Hrow reported, he said my flange was fine as it was tested also. I gathered from his comments that the flange issue is one that is being tested on all camera's being sent back, as well as the AF sensors being misaligned and having to be recalibrated as was with my camera.

Bruce, yes I had problems in One-Shot. Basically, I am one of those people who was reporting that nothing seemed to be in focus in all modes.

Jonsey, this time it took a week. last time was 11 days in shop plus traveling time.

Nevermind just called Canon to check on my Mark III I sent out Tuesday just to send back to make sure everything was working properly..Never had any problems with servo focus but I haven't really used it all that much. It had already had the Fix in Jan. I called to see if Canon had received the camera and they looked into the system and said it had been completed already and shipped....Thats like a 1 day turnaround! Makes me wonder if they even touched it. The girl on the phone said they replaced the submirror, and made other mechanical adjustments and updated firmware...Now I am really wondering what they did...Since it already had the fix done to it. I would of had it back today but they do 2 day shipping now....;(

One of the things that is bothering me as I have a chance to think about it without the pressure of having a conversation is that my camera definitely deteriorated over time. I am wondering if things loosened up and if so, will they will they loosen again?

The other thing is that this type of problem would account for why Jeff and others are showing images with one side or corner clearly OOF.

An alignment problem can certainly impact only one side of an image. In that case it's because the lens flange is not parallel with the sensor. A properly positioned shim under one side of the lens flange should compensate.

The use of shims in the camera industry for calibration of lenses and camera bodies is not unusual.

Another consideration;

Do you frequently hang the camera off your shoulder with a long lens attached to it? Say a 70-200 or larger? The weight of a hefty lens on a bouncing camera body can cause the metal around the lens mount to fatigue over time and may contribute to it falling out of alignment.

Not really. I'll frequently carry heavier lenses via the tripod mount or over a shoulder with an arm supporting the camera and lens. With bigger lens the only time I use a neck strap is for drop protection.

Have you decided not to sell your Mark III at this time? Thanks, Mike

Just got off the phone with Canon (Irvine) and they said they have "fixed something on my Mk3's circuit board and reinstalled firmware" What does this sound like to you? Mechanical I am not.
Thanks
