My completely non-professional opinion is that the D3 isn't as good with edge points, is a little slower acquiring focus, but a little more predictable in most focusing except for very low light.
If you mean the rightmost and leftmost than this is very logical as those AF points are not cross.

The 1D3 seems like a race horse, fast and powerful, but a little twitchy and more likely to do something completely unexpected.
I'd love to have such a horse or such a wife but not such a camera. I think I'll wait to the N. It's only 8 months to Beijing. I hope I won't have to wait longer.

Whatever you guys do, please don't allow my results to make you guys start second-guessing your own results. It's entirely possible that my camera's AF will work properly after one more trip to Frankenstein's laboratory, and I haven't ruled out my 70-200/2.8L IS as a confounding factor.

Why not send them back together. The Camera and the 70-200 Lens. Let Canon evaluate them.

I have spoken to someone about that, but unfortunately the VA facility isn't equipped nor trained for that, apparently (they are kind of a one-trick pony, right now). Once they decidedly state that the thing is 'fixed', then I'll take that next step, though who knows where it will lead. I should be able to do some testing of the 70-200 on the 30D in the next few days, then at least I'll know whether the lens is a confounding factor or not.

Quick update: Canon Customer Relations Department just called, and confirmed that their engineers agreed that the test images indicate that the camera isn't focusing properly in AI Servo, though also questioned the temperatures during the test sequence (due to the falling snow). They are requesting that I return the unit for an expedited repair trip to Irvine (for some reason), but she is going to check to see whey the 'manager of the camera division' requested it to go there, instead of VA.
This is going to get interesting, since if they can't fix the camera next time, yet they've acknowledged that it isn't performing correctly, that leaves only one reasonable solution at that point: replacement.

Hey Jeff,
Is it true your going to throw a party for ALL FMers once Canon gets it right
Seriously we all feel your hurt and and our fingers are crossed for you.
Good luck

Jeff,
It doesn't sound good to me if they asked sending the camera to NJ, instead of VA....and the problem is not a MORMAL repair, etc. !
If the camera still has AF problem after this trip, insist to talk with someone at higher level, and get the replacement, we as the earlier adopters deserve this ! and the new updated production sounds pretty good....

These are part of a test of a post fixed 1DMkIII. the first is 100% and the second is at 200%. It is a typical political yard sign thrown on to windshield of my GTI which was then driven at me at a steady 15 mph. The basic focus of the series isn't all that bad but the letters are straight white on a blue background - there is no drop shadow or other font enhancement.
This is present on all frames in the series and I had assumed that it had to do with the angle of sign creating JPG artifacts. I have not retested with RAW files to see if they behave the same way which is why I didn't bring it up in the other threads but it seems applicable to this one.

Tim, thanks. Not sure about the party, though.
Lide, she just called back and said she'd gotten it wrong, it is going back to VA, not Irvine (nor NJ). That didn't make any sense to me either, which is why I questioned her on it. I'm going to try and get some concrete answers on exactly what parts are being replaced on cameras, whether it is uniformly only one (the 'stopper, submirror'), or whether some cameras are getting additional parts replaced. It could help shed some light on the variability of this, and might highlight the fact that perhaps they (currently) cannot evaluate whether a camera leaving the repair facility actually works properly or not.
I don't think I need to go any higher up the food chain, as I'm already pretty high up; she appears to have the ear of executives in the division, and concrete answers and return phone calls are coming pretty quickly now (within an hour or two). They want me to call them when I drop it off at UPS, as she's going to 'track it to' their doorstep. For some reason I think I have their attention, though I'm not sure why, nor how I got it.

Thanks for that update; looks familiar, though with the window, it's hard to say if that introduced anything funky into the equation. It's sad to think that once my camera focuses properly, I'll then have to potentially start dealing with these secondary image registration ('ghosting') and/or focal plane issues.

The sign is on the outside. Thought I had it wedged in enough to stay up pretty straight but that didn't work well.

Ah, weird, it looks like it's inside the window. Guess you'd have to see the full-frame image to know, but it sounds like it doesn't matter, as far as focus goes.

The Internets
No, really, I would be surprised if Canon didn't read blogs and message boards like FM. They have already admitted that they read dpreview.

Someone from customer relations finally called me too, asking for raws. Please tell me if I could possibly be the problem.

I have to say PESCADOMAN, that if I were Canon I would want to see the RAW file from that as well. That looks like seriously bad PP, if it is not, you have a big ass problem and I would hate to see ISO 3200.

No, that seems to be the rather 'typical' front-focusing that occurs when these things aren't working correctly. I've got a bunch of those, just like yours.
