Oh, just like the 1D3? At least, that's what RG says: it's substantially better than the 2n in low light conditions. Even gets an A+ rating for low-light back-lit pole vaulting.
Then again: the chance I'll ever EVER shoot low-light back-lit pole vaulting is as close to zero as it gets.
What bugs me is: I don't want to see an A/B/C rating (btw, all are grade C and better for both cameras, let's not over-dramatize the "uselessness" of this camera) - I want to see numbers. How many OOF shots during what conditions and compared to the 2N? I'll add my own rating to that according to what I use most. If anyone has the patience to count all the sequences and post them, he'll get a bottle of beer from me.
All in all - I think Canon has made great strides in the right direction. Everyone will read the report as he wants to. So do I - positively.
I for one plan on keeping the MIII. Even if I have to use it only for specific tasks (indoor, bad light), it is the best low light camera Canon has. I am very thankful I did not dump any bodies to get it. I will probalby use the 1DMIIN outside on sunny days.
As for the D3 being better...there is always something better out there, but most of us forget....there is always a better photographer out there too.
I would take a great photographer with the MIII before I would take Uncle Joe wiht the D3.
I was one of those on the fence. I have a 5D but was looking forward to getting the III for BIF. I do appreciate what Rob did. It was free. And I think he did a service and was sincere about what he did. I ask myself now why should I get a camera like the MKIII as is stands today when I live in 90 degree temps and have lots of sunlight and would like to shoot birds when it could possibly still have problems in the conditions I exist in. I'm disappointed for those that have the camera and all they have been through. Strange how I've had the 5d for 25 months and never exhibted an error or fault and nothing but beautiful files produced by this machine. Guess I'll wait it out. I do hope a solution is reached for those that feel the pain. Good luck.

I totally agree with you, people here are amazing, they are just concentrating on these stupid issues rather than high quality photography. I hope that canon doesn't respond to RG with all respect, because this issue have took more than it deserve. please guys read Aurther Morris review and andy rose review you don't get the camera from the box with blue dot and expect 10 perfect frames. I've played a lot with the micro-adjustment and tracking speed in bright light, where i got superior results over my old 1d mark II N.
Now we need to concentrate more on photography and spirit of photography rather than these issues. if you believe the AF issue is a serious point then the other 8 new specs of 1dmkIII like live preview, sensor cleaning, ISO performance etc. smokes the 1dmarkIIN down.
Canon have admitted the problem and arranged the fix for the owners. not like the nikon where they don't arrange any fixes and just satisfy with D2Xs or D70s in the next few months of release and i can assure you that if there is problems with D3 or D300 they will release the D3s soon ))))
cheers

I count 22 out of 36 in focus the fast series of the runner for the Mark III and that is being generous. I opened then in PS
Sure but in Fast 1 series the 1D3 took 36 images, your 22 is very generous, I would put it around 15 or 16. The 1D2N shot 23 frames and very almost each is right on the money.

What was the MkIIn ? A revolutionary release compared to the MkII ?
The camera doesn't perform the way it should be, it has nothing to do with the GOOD/BAD photographers right ?

By reading the article and viewing all the images, i can say that RG's trying his best to save Canon's face...
Still RG did a great job............
Yeah, he did a great job. maybe it will keep Canon on its toes. I wondered why he didn't provide percentages and his red/ green bar. I would give the mark3 a D-

Canon obviously found a niche they had to own.
Got to say a big thanks to RG and his team for a wonderful job. Let's not forget he used 2 cameras handpicked by Canon and Canon were present for the testing so we can't criticize him for dodgy equipment or poor technique. He's been an unbiased messenger all through this. I say it was good investigative journalism and he did the right thing by getting Canon on board very early on.
The 1D III I think is now a forever tainted product unless Canon has some firmware miracle up it's sleeve. I pity those try to sell them otherwise. It sucks worse because in every other way the 1D III is a superb camera and improves on the 1D II across the board. But for me this camera is all about the AF and that is not delivering overall.
Maybe my 1D II will appreciate in price

The final mkIII death roll will occur superbowl sunday if all the sideline photographers are shooting w/nikons and wearing the nfl mandated canon vests.
I'm not surprised that RG gave the 1DIII a less than perfect grade. Sports photography is a tough test.
What I am surprised at is Canon seemed to take a long time before they started taking action. Wasn't the camera introduced in May? First RG article came out June 21, and Canon engineers didn't go to Pheonix until July 31??!
Canon should have discovered this problem themselves, but when they didn't, they should have reacted quicker.
