When using the Epson 3800 driver Advanced B&W settings I have come to understand that you can not let your application manage the colors or use an ICC profile the printer driver must do all the work, its actually stated in the manual.
My questions are:
What have you done to get the best B&W prints from your 3800? Did you let the Epson driver advanced B&W settings and let it do all the work sending a color photo to it? Did you tell the driver to print in color and convert your photo to B&W prior to sending it to the printer letting your application handle color/ICC profile? If you do not use the drivers Advanced B&W settings and send a B&W photos does the printer still use all the various black ink tanks?
Funny thing is I must have missed the part in the manual where it says P74 Note on side to turn off Photoshop color management, I'm using Qimage but still the same you must turn off color management when using the printers driver Advanced B&W photo settings.
I gave his profiles a shot, but how to I control what type of ink the printer uses? For instance if I use Matte or Art papaer I assume you want the printer to switch to those inks.
Paper was set to Epson Luster and I used Red River Polar Art, I guess I need to change the paper type to Matte so it uses the Matte inks on the Polar Art Paper?
I really don't know -- I searched Red River to see what they had to say about printing on Polar Art but it's been discontinued. Polar Mat says to use the Enhanced Mat settings which would use the mat ink.

Tom thanks for your help!
When I printed on the Polar Art I had the Epson driver on Epson Luster, this used the wrong black ink, I probably need to use the Matte paper setting so the printer lays down the correct ink. I did some Epson Luster B&W on Luster paper and the results were excellent.
