p.1 #1 · Portland, OR - good Photography stores

Hi,

I'm in a business trip in Portland, Oregon and was wondering where I can find good photography stores in the area (with pro-gear). Among other things I'm looking for domke bags. - Hope this is the right place to post it.

Thanks,
Hadar.

I have no idea what brands of bags they carry, but Citizens' Photo is a great store, with real photographers manning the store. Stop in and just have a bull session with them.

Never been to citizens photo.
Pro Photo Supply offers a fair selection but usually full retail list price, really lousy customer service (you have to stand in line and really want to buy something there) and also there is hardly ever any place to park your car with in 5 blocks.

Unless I am desperate I shop mail order.

I live in Portland and have been shopping for bags lately, so maybe I can help

Citizens has a very limited bag selection

ProPhoto carries all the major bag brands including thinktank and domke.

ProPhoto is really the place to go if you want to try stuff out...excellent selection of pro quality gear. The customer service can be aggravating, but once you 'get' to talk with someone they generally really know what they are talking about

Only other place worth mentioning is Camera World downtown, but its really a glorified shutterbug or Ritz.

I'm in Medford, but have visited many of the shops in Portland. What's the one out in Tigard? That was a pretty nice shop.

Are you thinking of Suburban Photo out in Beaverton? - I don't think they're
in business anymore (I haven't checked this personally though).

Depending on what you are looking for, Pro photo is probably the best in town in
terms of selection - their pricing is kind of bipolar though - it alternates between
full list and a pretty good deal (I got my 17-55 there for less than I could find it
for online by a fair amount...). Most of the time they are also crazy busy, so getting somebody to actually hand you what you need/take your money is difficult - and lately their selection has been getting a little thin on the little stuff like step up rings and supplies - I've been told
they were sold not too long ago, but again I personally hadn't asked anybody there about this.

The guys at Citizen's are pretty knowledgable, but I kind of stopped going in there
when I "have to" get something because they often didn't have what I needed.

Camera World downtown got bot by Ritz, so they are now just kind of a glorified Ritz camera - they have a fair selection of bags in the downtown location,
but I don't think they have any Domke stuff. Sometimes you get a deal when they are blowing out stuff, but other than that...

If you do old cameras, you can check out Hollywood camera on the east side - the old guy that runs the place is pretty knowledgable on film gear.

There are some Shutterbug stores around too - they actually seem to be able
to come up with stuff in one of their stores somewhere if I can't find something
I need that day at either pro photo or citizens, but they aren't cheap...

There are a couple of little players like Camera Solutions, Camera works
Northwest, Advance Camera, etc., as well.

Best,
rkg
