p.1 #1 · Anybody with Canon Lens repair experience?
My mother is a huge garage saler, and recnetly found a Canon 28-105 Mark II at a garage sale for 1 dollar. She gave me the lens last time I came home (I'm a college student), I put it on my 350D, and I heard a strange sound as if the camears motor was stuck or something. There was an error code on the camera display but at the moment I can't think of it. Regardless, I'm assuming something is physically wrong with the lens.
-I've checked and cleaned the contacts on the lens
-No matter if the lens is in manual or auto mode, the camera makes the same sound (as if the motor was trying to focus the lens but as stuck or something)
-The lens appears to be in perfect shape optically
-Even if the camera is OFF when I put the lens on, I get the same grinding sound - this seems strange because I figured that the camera would not supply any power to the lens until the camera was switched on.
Anyway, I'm imagingin I'll have to take the lens to have it repaired, but I was hoping that somebody on the forums might have some idea of what a possible problem could be. I am REALLY hoping that the repair cost will not be too great, again I was hoping somebody might be able to give me a ball park figure?

EDIT: I'm an idiot, it's a 28-105 - I have been researcing the 28-70 lens and I jumbled the two in my mind - sorry!

I assume you have the EF 28-70/f3.5-4.5? I cannot find any reference to a Mark II. If this is the lens, it was made in 1987 and probably no longer serviced by Canon. If the lens is still serviced, you can expect to pay $150-250 for repairs.
You could probably buy a new lens in this range for what it would cost to repair.

The 28-70 MKll f3.5-4.5 was introduced in June 1988 according to the Canon Museum but like John--G said, even if parts were available, it probably wouldn't be an inexpensive repair.

Well, I'll be honest, I guess I was/am really hoping that the problem turns out to be something minor and easily fixable.
I realize that the folds on the FM forums are in general more of the pro group, but I am "just" a photo editor at a university news paper, and my personal lens budget is on the "very small" side of things. I was really hoping the repair costs would be in the < 100$ range.
There is a guy in my hometown that owns a very respectable camera repair shop, I guess I'll just bring the lens into him and see what he says.

You can use Canon's online support to get a repair quote. I had the AF motor in my 35/2 replaced at a cost of $116, the lens was only $210 or so new.
I'm not sure that it's worth fixing a lens where the repair cost is that close to it's value. Have you tried it in manual focus? If that works, I'd sell it on ebay, you might get $30-$40 for it (a total guess)...that plus your $100 gets a working lens...
