Like i said - i love 'em - just not enough to know what kind of brakes they have. If you want to explain the difference between an engine and a locomotive (which for all practical purposes are the same to me) I'd love to know. I love learning. For all I know the engine is the A unit the engineer drives and the locomotives are the b units that help to pull the freight.
In Any case - I have a lot to learn - so feel free!
I love that bridge shot of the two CSXs - very nice photography.
Yeah - I know... they're big and noisy and vibrate and shimmy and can make a penny look like squashed bubble gum...
When I was a kid, I saw a lady who had been run over by one. Her car stalled on the tracks near my house and she got out of the car and froze. Walked over to see what happened. The car was wrapped around the front of the A unit and 1/4 mile down the track from the point of impact. She was lying in the area where the train hit her - with no arms or legs. It was a scene I'll never forget. Before that - I was real into trains of all sorts and knew a lot about them... Since then - i had lost interest with only an occasional interest in shooting them as they went by when I had a camera in hand.
All locomotives HAVE engines, but not all engines are applied to locomotives. For example, your car has an engine, but it is not a locomotive. To be brutally correct the locomotives on today's railroads, for the most part, are diesel-electric locomotives. They have a diesel engine that drives either an alternator (in the case of an AC loco) or a generator. The alternator/generator provides electricity to power the traction motors that turn the wheels. Before the diesel took over there were steam locomotives, most commonly called steam engines. Indeed, some steam locomotives had more than one steam engine, but they were still steam locomotives.
no offense but rather than split hairs... i'll call 'em engines sometimes and locos others 'cause to me an engine looks like an (no offense meant here either) injun (war bonnet ATSF) and a loco looks like a 2-4-2 chuggin' its way across the western Oklahoma prairie (my first rememberence of any train at all).
hey lets keep the great pics going - I'd rather see them than talk about 'em!
Hey, great thread! I've always had a soft spot for trains and finally had a chance this past weekend to shoot some. Actually, quite a chance as it turns out. Got a tour of a grain elevator as the train was pulling in to load. After the crew left, the elevator crew let us sit in the locomotive! Quite a thrill for the kids, and even this middle aged one.
Sometimes it's about the people who run trains, too. Here's Mark St Aubin, who is a part of the Nickle Plate Road 765 team, firing Western Maryland Scenic 734. It's the last run of the season, the stoker is not working, we have 10 miles of curves and 2.0 grade, and he's getting a workout! http://www.pennswoods.net/~wemullan/734.jpg
Very cold in the cab, too. Doubt if he'll even notice!
Big Appa..by the way, my forum handle here is taken from what the B&O crews used to call the big EM1 articulated locomotives..the railroad called them Appalachains.

This next shot is a few miles west of Oakridge and 3985 seems to be leading a parade of foamers. They're heading to Eugene...
Enjoy! There is more to come from this trip...

That looks like what they call "the Ratpack" on the road there. And the SECOND vehicle sure looks like it could be an undercover officer making sure all the photographers behave themselves!
In Colorado, they send a patrol car out every time they run steam from WY to Denver. Hwy 85 runs from Denver almost all the way to WY along the ROW (right of way).
Hmm,
I don't quite understand what has happened. I posted a reply, the main City, Still life & Abstract page says it's there, as does the Portal. However, I don't see it. So, if it gets posted twice that's why. I originally said something like this:
FSJ_Guy,
Nope, the second car was just another foamer. As for CHP on hwy 85, I guess some things never change, especially when UP is playing with their toys!
ljo913,
Really nice shot of the display in the museum. That is an amazing place! We went there on our honeymoon, and I returned later with the son-in-law and the oldest grandblessing. They both loved it! We spent several hours there. Way cool place.
Considering I spend almost every weekend thoughout the Summer and Fall at Cass, my thoughts may be somewhat bias but it is truly a Gem. Hope to see you there some day! If you have any question's about Cass feel free to ask.
