p.2 #1 · Powerex Battery Damage

I hope everyone here is aware the biggest impact you can have on your batteries is the charger you use... using cheapo chargers will really hamper the life of the battery. Pony up the $50-$75 and got a good quality charger thats intelligent and not based on a timer.

p.2 #3 · Powerex Battery Damage

All the comments have been interesting and I can see that battery discharge is not that common. I was just un-lucky. The flash or batteries did not get wet from any outside source of water or condensation. The corrosion on the battery ends seems to have been caused by the discharge of the batteries. When the case was opened it was wet inside with the red battery fluid. I can even see the red stain on the inside of the flash control window.

I use Powerex's in all of my gear (not just cameras), as well as a VERY expensive and nice intelligent charger, and I have never had a single problem with them, ever. I will still use Powerex batteries, think of all the people that use them fine, then you have 1 person who had a problem, thats a pretty low failure rate.

p.2 #6 · Powerex Battery Damage

I have used Powerex for the past three years with excellent results. It appears that there had to be some issue with the storage in the trunk and heat related somehow...just my guess. Rust usually develops from condensation, and humid conditions could have caused it.

i would send the pics and a letter detailing the problem to Powerex requesting replacement.

I've been using a "smart" charger with Eneloops and Duracell 2650 rechargeables. They've been performing flawlessly. Also, the Sony "Cycle Energy" rechargeables, are the exact same battery as the Sanyo Eneloop. Just different labeling.

On advice from this forum I purchased Maha Powerex batteries for my flashes which I used very successfully on two weddings. They work great but this last summer they destroyed my Canon 550EX Flash. So far Maha has offered no help. Are there safe batteries or is everyone having this problem?

ding ding ding ding

EVERY product in EVERY market WILL have a problem. People, don't let ONE issue like this scare you from ever using the product again. This is unfortunate, but there are far too many unknowns here to say the product was faulty. Even so, the failure rate for their product could easily be 0.0001%. This is ONE persons unfortunate experience.

Even if there was a test conducted to find out what caused this you may find out only 1 out the four batteries failed.

I have several different versions of this battery and currently using PowerEx 2700 I have never ever had any issues. Nor have I see anyone posting an issue about the batteries. I would also like to add the PowerEx 2700 now come with a 5 year warrenty.

Don't forget to post images of your Sanyo 2700's if any of them deteriorate. Wouldn't want you to miss out on adding to the paranoia...

You just think it as if you are lucky. What if you were in the middle of a shooting, and the batteries went off just a few inches away from your head,,,your eyes....

we've used ours for almost 4 years now and we have nothing but good things to say about them (I push them very hard too... lots of full power flashes during a wedding...). Of course, we did buy a good charger for them so that helped, but I've never had anything like this.

I do hope you get it resolved though. good luck!

An October post, with no resolution, is seized on as a reason to not buy a product from an otherwise apparently reliable source, and kicked back out onto the web. Again, possible groundlessly poisoning the well. Google searching several possible selections of "problem" and Canon 550ex, battery, capacitor, Powerex, leak, etc., doesn't turn up much, except this thread. So even if we let it die, someone trying to research (a good thing) will still keep coming across it.
